Shadowpaw

Despite it having been nearly three days ago she still felt the nerves in her paws as she tried in vain to sleep in her den. Her ocean blue eyes were closed but that meant absolutely nothing because while they were closed she was not sleeping. There was simply too much buzzing around in her mind like when she and her mentor would go out again, what she would learn next, when she would learn some cool fighting techniques! It set her body a shiver --she hoped she wasn't bothering her denmates-- and after many minutes of doing absolutely nothing but making the bees of anticipation buzz in her belly she decided it was time she get up. Perhaps her mentor would be out waiting for her or perhaps there were duties that she could perform when she got up! Well, fun duties... It would suck a lot having to put bile on ticks for the elders or something like that.

The cream apprentice shuddered at the thought which finally got her up and going. The she-cat extended her paws out in a languid stretch, jaws parting in a yawn. She ended her waking routine by giving her coat a shake and then exiting the apprentices' den. A quick glance around told her that a few cats were up and about which was to be expected as the sun was already rising quickly, telling her that it was a couple of hours from midday. It wouldn't have been bad to sleep more but she was excited and didn't know what today would have in store! Again she could feel anticipation rise in her gut but she tried to tamp it down by giving herself a morning wash near the entrance. She didn't see her mentor anywhere, which was fine, Shadow hadn't gotten to talk very much to the other clanmates yet. Perhaps today would be that day.

Ravenpaw was, for lack of a better word, ticked off.

Not only had he been instructed to stay within camp today, which was achingly bad enough - but now here he was, gagging at the dripping taste of mousebile seeping into his tongue, trudging forlornly out of the elders' lair. The moment the fluffy black cat had escaped that den of hell was the moment he spat out the remaining scraps of mousebile, gasping for fresh air as he did so, the rancid taste lying thick on his taste buds like rotten crowfood. Never had he tasted something so wretched before in his life.

Rasping his tongue quickly down his chest, thinking that he'd even rather a furball than to look at that mossy poison ever again, Ravenpaw's eyes flicked from one cat to the next, as if searching for a desperate excuse to forgo his job and at the very least garner a small break. StarClan knew, he deserved it. His gaze finally fell upon Shadowpaw, and his heartbeat quickened with excitement. That's right! The new apprentice. He'd been so busy these last few days that he'd hardly had a chance to introduce himself.

He smacked his lips together one last time, though still the fowl taste lingered persistently on his tongue. With an annoyed shake he sprung to his paws and bounded over to the she-cat, clearing the distance between the elders' and the apprentices' den in a few quick leaps.

"Hi, Shadowpaw!" he mewled, skidding to an abrupt halt beside her. "You on a mission today? I bet you can smell what my mentor put me up to." Though amusement laced his voice, Ravenpaw felt anything but amused. If he ever had to even look at mousebile again he was sure he'd retch up his dinner. Even the mere thought was enough to make him feel sick.

Shadowpaw

The young she-cat smelled him before she saw him. There was a distinct tang of... something on the wind, unpleasant, vile. Involuntarily her nose curled up as she lifted her head from her fur. Ugh, what was that? Her eyes snapped towards the right and she saw someone approaching quite rapidly. His fur was dark and his eyes were green. Ravenpaw... That was his name, right? They might have been in the nursery together at least once but she couldn't remember if she'd ever played with him at all. Not for lack of interest, she just hadn't. Then, he'd moved on to the apprentice's den a while before her so there had never been that opportunity afterwards.

The jovial young tom rushed up to her and greeted her cheerfully. As soon as the dust cleared and she focused on him Shadowpaw knew that the smell was straight from him. Not to seem like a jerk she managed to keep her nose from wrinkling this time but just barely. "I'm sure everyone this side of Fourtrees can." Her quiet voice said with some humor as she looked him over. "What did you do to get tick duty?" Had he gotten in trouble or was his mentor just the sort to make poor apprentices clean off the elders?

She knew that her day might be a bit boring but at least she didn't have to clean up the elders. True, they did need the help and it probably made them feel better but that still didn't make the task any easier. Blegh, she wanted to gag just thinking about using that disgusting stuff to rub on ticks.
