Bored. Bored. Bored. Bored. Bored. Bored. Bored.
The thought chased itself around inside of Crystalpaw's head, flitting in one ear, around to go in the other ear and through the twisting spirals of her mind. The tortoiseshell and white apprentice kept up the mantra as she watched warriors walk to and fro across camp. They all looked busy with important jobs to do, heads thrown high with other apprentices tripping along behind them. Crystalpaw envied her peers as they tumbled after their mentors doing important looking things. Tipfeather was out today, stuck on patrol duty which normally meant Crystalpaw got to go along and spend all day out in the treetops, practicing her climbing and jumping. Not today. She'd been caught putting tree sap in Pinestar's nest for a joke and now she was camp-bound for the next three days. So Tipfeather got to go off, apprentice free, and do important things while Crystalpaw was trapped with her own boredom. The young she-cat was sorely tempted to just sneak out...it wouldn't be hard...but Pinestar was laying near his den talking to Half-face and every now and then the older tom looked her way to make sure she was staying put.
'Grumpy old badger,' Crystalpaw thought bitterly, laying her chin on her paws. She'd situated herself beside the apprentice den, half in the shadow of it and half in the sun, just so she could watch things in the clearing. Now though that seemed like a bad idea. She was jealous of her busy clanmates and watching them get to leave camp was making her restless. If nothing else, Pinestar knew how to pick his punishments...he knew being confined to camp would drive her mad.
Groaning in frustration the young she-cat rolled over onto her back and clenched her eyes shut. White paws in the air, belly up, she stretched and tried to work the antsy itching feeling out of her muscles. By the time she'd flopped back onto her side Crystalpaw had only managed to make herself dusty. The itch was still right under her skin and without a doubt she was going to lose her mind. With eyes half-closed, Crystalpaw watched the skinny frame of Deertail amble across the camp to drop a lark in the freshkill pile. He looked loose-limbed and content as he headed back out...Crystalpaw wanted to smack him but that was just her jealousy talking. She wanted to be out there in the trees, running and climbing and hunting...not laying around confined to camp because Pinestar couldn't take a joke.
Getting up, Crystalpaw shook out her medium length pelt and slid back into the shadow of the apprentice den when Pinestar was looking over at Half-face, the pair deep in conversation. Behind the apprentice den there wasn't much space between the back of the den and the camp wall but that suited Crystalpaw just fine. She wasn't a big cat, not like some of the warriors or apprentices, and her fur didn't get too terribly tangled when she slid between the two. Hunkering down, ears perked and alert for approaching pawsteps, Crystalpaw began to dig at the wall trying to keep as quiet as possible. If she could break her way out, Pinestar would never know she'd slipped out. She knew the patrol routes well enough to avoid anyone that might know she was on lockdown...maybe she could find Tigerpaw and convince her to go have some fun? After all, if Crystalpaw wasn't supposed to be leaving camp the she couldn't very well bring back prey could she? Might as well have some fun...
Crystalpaw became so absorbed in trying to quietly break away layers of the bracken and brambles that surrounded SkyClan's camp that she didn't hear the pad of approaching paws...and she didn't notice the shadow falling over her side.
NOTES. Crystalpaw likes to think she's more sneaky than she is...
