[attr="class","itdscroll"]Elksong stood outside of Skyclan's camp and inhaled, sucking in oxygen coated with the tint of morning dew. The taste rolled around on her tongue, drawing the lights down dim when she lowered her eyelids, world sipping away in the moisture that coated the bottoms of her paws. Elksong unsheathed her claws and flexed them into the damp earth restlessly, eyes flickering open, catching the world in an array of flashing rainbow colors; the morning draped itself in new-leaf glory, as though Skyclan territory were a robin shedding its ugly fledging grayness for a new coat of many colors. Elksong looked skyward, narrowing her eyes against the rising sun's glow, before dropping her head to examine the ground dug up between her claws. She was lucky it was only dew that soaked the ground, and not spring rain, for she would have mud to coat her claws instead of a few clumps of clinging clay. Elksong shook the dirt away with a huff of air, gaze returning to her surroundings as she sheathed her claws once more. I'm being silly, she thought to herself, remembering with an anxious pang of her heart why she was here.
Lilyfang, her old mentor and closest friend and confidante, had set everything up. The two of them would be hunting with Pinestar this morning, a task instigated by Lilyfang herself, whose friendship with Pinestar had its perks. Elksong sorely wished there was some way to dispel the nervousness that shivered its way down her spine every time she thought about the morning's task. I did ask Lilyfang for her help, Elksong reminded herself. But then again... I didn't expect her help to be so prompt. Or to aim so high! Elksong certainly hadn't had her sights set on their leader. But Lilyfang's confidence had been infectious nonetheless. She rolled her shoulders and got up, pacing in a tight circle that wound itself around the tiny holes she had dug with her claws. Elksong was pleased that they were going hunting, at least, for here were her strengths. She was one of the better trackers and hunters in Skyclan; her long legs gave her an advantage when killing birds. Elksong was reminding herself of this and her typical prowess when it came to serving her clan when she heard sounds and froze in her pacing, turning as neatly as she could manage to greet Lilyfang and Pinestar when they emerged, belatedly soothing the excited rustle of her twitching tail behind her.
