Sparrowpelt felt a spring in her step with the chill nipping at her fur. She knew it was morning and the chill would fade to average- but she liked the winter chill. It made her actually want to move to stay warm. Her eyes flicked up to the trees around her as she focused on the sky through the canopy. She was waiting for her apprentice, Crowpaw to have his first meal and join her on a patrol around the territory to show him where certain herbs were. Part of her felt nervous with how Littleheart died, she didn’t know if she would suffer the same fate one day. She didn’t want to risk Crowpaw knowing nothing so she constantly challenged him as much as she could each day to learn. She never was overbearing- and she was always happy to answer questions, but she never knew if she was being too hard on him. She made sure that he had plenty of time to be with his friends – a luxury she didn’t feel as a kit and an apprentice, but she didn’t know about him.

She felt his drive when she had met him- and simply knew somewhere inside her brain that he was perfect. Something drew her to him. Nothing of StarClan’s word, simply her intuition. It still made her always worry she chose wrong, but StarClan had never told her otherwise. She hadn’t really talked to StarClan more than absent feelings that she sometimes felt someone talking to her. After Littleheart’s death- she swore she heard him talking to her or she would see him in the center of camp at night. She swore it was because she was losing it that she saw him- but she prayed to StarClan he was still seeing over her.

It was still early in the day- but she hoped that it would keep the heat away from her and the herbs. She wanted to teach Crowpaw that finding them in the morning was easier- since the dew or rains had just watered the ground and it was easier to grab any roots. It was a technique that Littleheart had taught her rather early on in her apprenticeship and she was glad for it since some herbs were so ingrained in the ground that it was troublesome to drag them up. She was hoping that she could show him at least the basics- and if they found something to hunt- they could grab it. Thankfully she learned that from her brother since her mentor wasn’t able to teach her before he passed.

When she heard paws behind her- she turned her head. “Crowpaw.” She greeted warmly- seeing the familiar fur. “I thought I could show you the stashes of herbs around our territory today- at least the ones in season. Test you on them. Plus I might be able to show you some basic hunting skills if you want.” She paused, awkward. She still didn’t know what to do with an apprentice. What did you do with apprentices? Her mentor died too early- she didn’t know what you were supposed to do with them. “Only if you want.” She repeated- hoping to make sense of her jumble of thoughts.
