there were a lot of things that excited the tiny she-cat at the best of times. succeeding in completing a training task for falconstar, helping another cat, avoiding some strange sticking up twig. they were all examples of the usual types of success the she-cat was keen for. but, that afternoon marked something else, and with quick, barely coordinated paws, tinypaw found herself speeding ahead of the rest of the hunting patrol on the way back to camp, with the large raven she’d managed to snatch hanging partly in her jaws, partly a bit too close to the ground as she tried to lift her head up as far as she could to avoid dragging it across the ground.
a bird, a big bird at that. what kind of success was that? it was a more luck than it was skill, with the slow-moving bird not quite moving fast enough off the ground or through the tangled undergrowth. it had been a little bit of a fight to even kill it, really, and even after it stopped moving as much, an older warrior had to come in and make sure it was dead. but, it was eventually killed properly, and with some encouragement, the she-cat was sent ahead to show her prize. the question was who did she take it to? part of her wanted to immediately show it to her father, but at the same time given how much luck was involved, she wasn’t quite sure that was fair. she wanted to show him something that skills alone had led her to catch, proof she was going to be okay as an apprentice.
but, she could think of another cat who’d be just as happy for the bird, and for her catching something in general, and the idea of falconstar’s expression when she took it to him was enough to make the tiny apprentice move faster, and over the ridge just outside the camp. The leader was always sitting around in the camp when she needed him too, so no doubt it’d be easy to find him. at the entrance, tinypaw did force herself to stop and catch her breath slightly, even if the heavy breathing had feathers immediately tickling her nose. with watering eyes, she looked around fighting off a sneeze. thankfully, it didn’t take long to pick out falconstar’s pelt and large form among those who were gathered in the clearing. she was off immediately.
“’alconsta’! ’alconsta’!” she tried to yowl ahead, but the bird muffled it all and got a few more feathers stuck to her tongue. not the smartest move. the moment she was sure she was close enough to the leader though, she released her grip on the bird, letting it thump to the ground at her father’s paws, before she immediately turned her head to the side to let out a loud sneeze, before spitting a few times to get rid of the feather pieces that remained stuck to her mouth. as soon as it was clear, though, her attention was back around again, and she bounced to the side, jumping up onto her hind legs to prod falconstar’s upper limb with her top paws, before shoving her head forward and rubbing it against the same spot, and slowly sliding it down his limb as she rolled over, landing on the ground with a small thud.
“look what i caught!” she eventually added, staring up at his face with a toothy grin settled on her face.
