Smallpaw dragged a bundle of dry ferns, cattail fluff, and feathers in her mouth. It was her turn to help change the bedding for the dens today, and while most apprentices would be bored or irritated that they were stuck with this duty instead of learning to hunt or fight, the tiny calico didn’t mind. Staying in camp meant she didn’t have to swim out of it—besides, she liked to visit the kits every now and then. They were going to be apprenticed soon, right? That would mean the apprentice's den would be more lively... hopefully that also meant there would not be a big expectancy for her to talk much.
Smallpaw dragged the new bedding into the nursery—the queens, kits, and elders deserved the first picks of what to put in their nests. She set the large bundle down—larger than herself—and greeted the queens and kits in her quiet, squeaky voice. "Hi. I brought, um, some new bedding, since everything's getting wet from the rain..." Smallpaw shifted her feet shyly, realizing she didn’t really need to give a big explanation about what was going on with the bedding. They all realized it was raining lately.
Don’t be so mouse-brained, Smallpaw. She berated herself in her head, before trying to make up for her blunder by making small talk. "Would you, uh, mind helping me, Bearkit? Not with replacing it— unless you want to— I mean you guys get to pick... There's some feathers here from a bird that was caught... There's also some cattail fluff..."
To any onlooker outside of RiverClan, it would appear from size that Bearkit was the apprentice and Smallpaw was the kit. "You should be getting apprenticed soon, right? In the next moon or so..."
