Goldkit

Goldkit sniggered to herself as she sneaked out of the camp, finding a small reedbare wall that was big enough for her to squirm out of. She wasn't the biggest of kits, more stream-lined than bulky. That didn't stop her from being the biggest troublemaker in the nursery.

Stumbling to her paws as she popped out of the hole, Goldkit crept low and glanced around the outside with a cheeky glint in her moss-green eyes. Snickering again, Goldkit slunk off towards the river; glancing back at the camp to make sure no one was following her. Especially not her brother, ugh, that tom was such a mom.

The river loomed ahead of the pretty kit, rippling and lazily rubbing against the pebbled shore; undisturbed by this intruder in its midst. Goldkit grinned to herself and trotted up to the crystal-clear water, dipping a single white-socked paw into the cool liquid before shaking it dry. Chilly.

A sound snapped at her ears and the ginger tabby swung her head around to stare down the bank; silvery eyes wide and ears pricked, alert.

Without a moment's hesitation, Goldkit turned to study the area for places to hide. Ah ha! There! A hollow log lay trussed up amongst the reeds, just big enough for her to hide in. The ginger tabby barely flinched as her fur brushed against the damp bark and she curled up in a small coil; peering out of the limited view the end of the log allowed her.

she'd taken it upon herself to embark on a solo patrol — yewtail, after barking out the day's assignments, had slipped out of camp to spend a little time by herself. the deputy intended to go fishing at a secluded spot of the river, far enough from the usual spots that she wouldn't be disturbed but not so barren as to encounter treacherous rapid waters. the tabby had settled on a bit of shore in a small clump of reeds, quickly settling into a position that allowed her to rest comfortably on her haunches, but also in a way that kept her shadow from falling on the water, thus alerting the fish of her looming presence.

she sucked in a breath; though the morning had been a relatively quiet one, it was not without its stresses. each day came with its own mixture — sometimes yewtail wondered if it was possible to go a single day without someone getting lost or injured or in some way creating a disturbance in the monotonous flow of time — but, she supposed with drooping shoulders, that was how her life was. being deputy of riverclan was hard work: she'd known that when she'd taken the job, and she'd expected the burden on her shoulders when it came, but understanding something didn't always alleviate the stress of it happening. she'd quickly come to realize this in the few moons she'd spent at riverclan's helm alongside her uncle, but that didn't make it any easier. hardly anything made it easier, actually; yewtail was making attempts at figuring out some routine, but nothing yet seemed therapeutic.

i'll just have to find something that works for me. she thought, muscles tensing as she watched the shapes of fish flicker underneath the water's surface. it'd been several minutes since she'd arrived, and all she'd done was reflect on the state of her life and all the various stressors that came along with it. a sudden sense of guilt and a realization of wasted time — the very bane of the enterprising yewtail's existence — overcame her, so she inched closer to the water, preparing to dip a white-tipped paw into the water... mid-strike, however, a sudden crack! stole her attention from her hunting, and the deputy twisted around to investigate.

"who's there?" perhaps it wasn't the most tactical of replies, but yewtail wasn't worried about it. she was deep in the heart of her own territory, besides... no enemy warrior would dare venture so close to camp, or at least not without being spotted by one of the border patrols she'd assigned that morning. "if you needed something, you should've asked for it in camp," yewtail added, in a grim tone, before rising to her paws to see who had made the noise — but there was no-one in sight. tasting the air with an open maw, she furrowed her brows, perplexed, for there was more another's scent in he air... but nobody to be found.

Goldkit

Goldkit froze as she recognised the voice; even from within the murky log. The tabby had bothered just about every cat in the clan, Yewtail was no exception. The only reason she hadn't blabbed to Magpiestar about something was because her brother, Flamekit otherwise known as Flamebottom, would grab her tail and haul her back. Annoyingly.

Glancing around the log, Goldkit's eyes widened to adjust to the dark dead bark. It smelled musty, like damp moss and roots. It was very dark but Goldkit could still see and feel the ridges and the brittle edges of the log; the back wasn't hollow, still filled with the dead rings of the tree's age.

Hollow... Hm. Goldkit didn't give into the babyish instinct to crawl out of the log, hang her head and trundle over to Yewtail. No, this kit was smart and a well-known troublemaker. She isn't going down, or back to camp, without a fight.

Knowing that Yewtail couldn't fit in the small log, Goldkit grabbed its hollowness for her advantage. Breathing deeply, the ginger tabby began to speak.

"I am a ghooooost." She yowled, her voice echoing and dropping to an empty low tone as it bounced around the log and into the air.
