Shellpaw
I had a dream so big and loud
I jumped so high I touched the clouds
I had a dream so big and loud
I jumped so high I touched the clouds
'It's only water, it's only water, it's only water...'
Round and round the mantra went, marching around in Shellpaw's head like soldiers marching to war. She'd been crouched on the riverbank for StarClan knows how long with those words running round and round in her head, tumbling over one another, trying to psyche herself up enough to actually...move closer to the wet stuff. It was almost sunhigh and Shellpaw had snuck down to the river just after dawn, when she'd had breakfast with Whitewolf. Her mentor had informed her they would be working on her swimming and fishing skills soon but today he was busy with patrols. Normally Shellpaw would trail after the big white warrior, his calico shadow with a big mouth, but at his announcement she'd beat a hasty retreat. He'd seemingly accepted her excuse that she wanted to go hunting with her brothers instead of walking the same patrol routes she knew by heart. Whitewolf had been generous enough to let her go and maybe Shellpaw had been a bit to quick to leave camp but he hadn't called her back to inquire.
So....
She was still here. Green eyes stared intently at the sunlight glinting off the rushing water. Every time she tried to get her muscles to move so she could walk closer Shellpaw would find her stomach writhing like it was full of angry adders. Her muscles would tense up and she'd have to fight every instinct in her body that screamed at her to shrink back. Lionpaw would laugh himself stupid if he could see her cowering ten feet from the water, not even at the water's edge. Sunpaw would duck his head, look ashamed and shuffle his feet. They both felt so bad about it even though it had just been an accident. They hadn't meant to push her in...
'I know that,' Shellpaw told herself firmly, flexing her claws nervously in the gritty sand underfoot. '...Then why am I still scared?'
A lump formed in Shellpaw's throat as she stared at the water. What would Whitewolf say? He'd roll his eyes and tell her to stop being such a mouse...No he wouldn't be that mean...He would tell her in his deep steady voice that there was nothing to be afraid of and that he would teach her so that she couldn't drown. He was a good teacher like that, steady and dependable. He wouldn't say she was bad for being afraid but he wouldn't let her stay afraid. Shellpaw could appreciate that....on any other day in any other place. Shifting her weight from foot to foot, Shellpaw bit her tongue nervously.
'Just do it, get it over with. It's not so scary! Warriors swim everyday!'
Sucking in a deep breath, Shellpaw stood and made her way on stiff legs to the very edge of the water. It lapped at the bank, seemingly harmless, glittering in the bright afternoon sunlight. The constant rush of the current sounded softer than the thunder she remembered from her kithood near drowning experience. Maybe...maybe it wasn't so bad? A small glimmer of hope flared in Shellpaw's heart as she peered into the rippling surface, her heart beating rabbit-quick against her ribs. She was just leaning closer, as though to take a drink, when a loud SNAP from behind her sent a shock of fright down Shellpaw's spine. A yowl of fright tore from her throat, the young apprentice nearly leaping out of her fur in fright. Whirling around, Shellpaw nearly stumbled backward into the water but as soon as the cold stuff touched her hind foot she sprang forward away from it, prancing ridiculously on the riverbank as she kicked water droplets off her now damp hind foot.
"Ahh! Cold cold cold cold cold!" Shellpaw wailed, trying to get her feet dry.
Poor Shellpaw was so distracted by her "get the water off of me" dancing around she was doing that she forgot what had made her jump in the first place: the fact that she was no longer alone on the riverbank.
