The river was calm today, the sound of the rushing currents that lay beneath the surface nearly a whisper when compared to certain times past. Standing on the edge of the Twoleg Bridge, gazing into the clear reflective surface below, Sharpfrost mulled over this very useful and convenient information with a critical eye. With the encroaching heat of new-leaf growing more and more intense as the days passed by, it wasn't unusual for the water levels to dip and rise suddenly. The fact that the river was lower than usual today was a boon in her favor, especially for what she had planned. The molly's gaze moved away from the flow of the crystal colored water to the outstretch of land off into the distance, losing herself to her thoughts and plans for this particular day. The sky was cloudless, an endless sea of blue coloring the heavens. Golden sun rays pierced through the air, caressing everything within eyesight with their warmth. The leaves on the trees seemed to stretch open farther to soak in all the golden sphere had to offer, the earth softened beneath her paws as the last traces of leaf-bare and snow finally gave way to fresh green grass, even the river wasn't spared. The clear and cool waters below her perch sparkled and shimmered beautifully, as though stars had been caught in the currents.
All in all, it was truly a perfect day to be out and about, and an even better day for training. Before Magpiethorn had stepped down as leader of RiverClan in favor of Duckstar, he'd seen fit to bestow Sharpfrost with a new apprentice. Her first official apprentice since Heatherspring so many moons ago. In some ways it was a daunting thought, and in other ways it made her curious. It had been quite a while since she'd trained an apprentice. Heatherspring had been a paw-full, and Duckstar, though not Sharpfrost's official apprentice, had her own difficulties. Sharpfrost wondered just what kind of challenges Mushroompaw would present. If she were asked, she could honestly say that she knew next to nothing about Mushroompaw. Sharpfrost rarely had reason to visit the Nursery with Bluethroat still hanging about, and even so had no true desire for an apprentice when her time could be better used elsewhere. But nevertheless she'd been paired up with the little white and ginger tom, so obviously Magpiethorn thought she could do something with him. A great sigh heaved itself from the molly's chest as she turned her gaze away from the open spaces around the bridge. Lifting her gaze to the nearest section of railing above her, the molly reared back onto her hind limbs and stretched upward, grasping the edge of the bridge railing with her paws and pulling herself upon it. With careful movements, she settled herself into a comfortable seat upon the precarious edge, her tail left to dangle behind her as she let her gaze follow the river for as far as it would go... and wait.
Before Sharpfrost had left the camp that morning, she had sought out her apprentice in the Apprentice's Den with specific instructions. In a cool, stoic voice, she had order that once Mushroompaw had finished eating and any apprentice duties he had around camp that he was to find her at the Twoleg Bridge for training. Her tone had left no room for argument, and she had not given the apprentice a chance to respond before she had turned heel and walked out of camp to begin her solo patrol. She'd taken her time, patrolling the entirety of the border near the Bridge before she finally settled herself in for a waiting spell. If Mushroompaw was smart, he wouldn't keep her waiting more than she had to. Sharpfrost was a fair mentor, but she was also strict and had a feeling that was what would be needed with this one.
Why else would Magpiethorn have given her an apprentice?
