It felt like the shadows of the twisting breaches were like snakes. They bled out from around the bark and undergrowth, reaching out through the smallest glimmers of light that got through the dense canopy above. Each seemed longer than the last, reaching for him, fangs bared, reaady to launch. Dandelionpaw could feel them getting closer, as he stood at the edge of the dence oaks themselves, the trees looming dark and heavy ahead of him. The tom almost wanted to step back, step away from them, go back into the thinner forest that made up the bulk of the territory.
But, he needed to do this, needed to try and break himself that little bit more. He couldn't fix what wasn't broken first. The white tom flicked his one good ear to clear it, and refocused on the noise around him, ears swivelling around to take up as much noise as possible. From his right side, he was greeted only by silence. The same silence he'd always had. Sometimes it was frustrating, and only added to his fears. However, when it came down to it, if he wanted to be something in the clan, he needed to put things aside. He needed to be strong.
... Maybe he should have brought Icepaw along, though. His brother was all the more confident, prepared, willing. All those things might have made a difference. But that would have ruined the point, wouldn't it? Dandelionpaw wasn't sure anymore. The tom let out a long, slow breath, and lifted his chin sightly, ears lowering. Carefully, he forced a paw forward. That was what he needed to focus on. One paw in front of the other. He moved forward with the utmost hesitation, eyes flicking around, following the shadows, his tail flicking quickly, agitated, behind him. Calm down Dandelionpaw.
Yet, the shadows continued to loom, and the white tom slowly lifted his head, studying the flickers of light that snuck through the leaves from the sky above. He didn't understand why SkyClan fought for the territory so much. It was a noise that had the tom freeze in his tracks, tail still, ears pricked, and heart immediately jumping into his throat. What was that rustling? The noise seemed to rumble in the branches above, like a snake's hiss, and looking back to the ground Dandelionpaw swore the shadows were closing in around him. The apprentice swallowed, backing up till he hit the trunk of a tree.
"Uh... hello?" He called out, voice turning into a squeak half-way through.
crescendo, i got here for these two!
