The days were growing steadily hotter the closer newleaf got to greenleaf. Rain hadn't exactly been sparse or infrequent, but there was enough space between the storms that it was always welcome. Today was one of those days, where there wasn't a cloud in the sky and the sun blazed directly on her head.
Creampaw irritably shook her head, trying to dispel the flies that were buzzing in her ears. The insects seemed particularly active today, and they were getting on Creampaw's nerves. Crawling through her pelt, around her ears, inside her nose... They were making it very difficult for her to hunt!
She was lucky prey needed as much water as cats did on hot days like today. Already she'd spotted the bushes shaking with potential fresh-kill, but that was on the other side of the stream. Creampaw wasn't so good a hunter yet that she could cross it and get to them before they ran away, so she'd passed on them.
Now though, she was in luck! There was a water vole, on her side of the stream. It was close too, so she wouldn't have to go very far to be ready to pounce. Creampaw crept as quietly as she could toward it, trying to remember everything Deertail had taught her and everything she'd seen the other apprentices practice.
No sticks in the path? Check. Keeping paws light so they wouldn't be heard? Check. Distance closing in to a pouncing zone? Check. There was one thing she forgot about though; her own body. Creampaw's tail betrayed her by twitching in excitement, sending the fronds above her rattling.
The water vole jerked it's head up and, spotting her, squealed in warning to all it's furry little friends and leaped back into the water. "Oohh!" she whined, rising from her stalking position with a sigh. Oh well, at least no one was around to see it.
