morningfrost could feel his skin burning. every inch on fire. breaths coming out as puffs of hot air and burned his lungs. infernos raged in his stomach. he could still feel that stare searing into the back of his head. it followed him all the way out into the forest. mocked, jeered, looked down at him. he hated it, hated himself by being so affected. it was hardly anything more than a passing glance, but it was enough to scorch his pride, eat at his mind. he needed out. morningfrost swallowed dryly, and his claws came out to knead at the ground. he had to shake that feeling off. had to. he wouldn’t be able to ever face those scrutinizing eyes again if he couldn’t don the iron armour he so carefully and meticulously wore.
the ginger tom raced headlong into the dense wood. he wove through towering sycamores and pines, jumped over fallen logs and made his way past poking branches and bushes. his paws hurt from pounding so hard against the earth, and his breath came in short, strained exhales, but it helped expel some of the turmoil in his mind. with his body at work, his mind could somewhat rest. morningfrost was numb. numb to the world and its vicious stares.
rustling. not his—something else, something small, quick. morningfrost skidded to a halt. sun-yellow eyes flared like fireflies in the dark. he took in deep breaths, opened his senses to his surroundings. it was a chipmunk, not far from where he was. on high alert, brain switched to nothing but primal instinct, morningfrost prowled forward, body hung low to the forest floor. he could spy it through the ferns now. an easy catch. morningfrost lunged towards it with an anger-fueled yowl, caring less that it wasn’t a good idea. he needed this. needed to feel in charge. to feel powerful. the tabby gave chase, though his muscles begged to slow down. he pushed himself, exerted what was left of his energy to scale up an aging oak to pursue the chipmunk. if he could just bring it back to camp, maybe he wouldn’t be met by more disappointment, more judgement, or worse, a ‘disciplining’ blow.
gritting his teeth, morningfrost clung cautiously to a high branch, inching closer to the chipmunk. there was no escape for it now. if he could just...
“mousedung!” he was being too reckless. didn’t think wisely. stupid, stupid! before he could react, the striped rodent had leapt to its safety into a farther off tree. there was no hope of following it. morningfrost let out a string of curses. that was when he looked down. oh, starclan. he felt dizzy just gazing at the ground, so far down below him. the branch threateningly creaked and cracked. he could taste copper on his lips. did he bite his tongue? coward. thunderclan cat who can’t stand heights? pathetic. his stomach rumbled with something less than pleasant. “if someone sees me up here, i’m going to end myself. never going to here the end of this, i swear.”
(hallelujah, skyy and her socks for the ot3!! lmfao someone help morningfrost pls omfg)
