[attr="class","mpcontent"] the early light of sunhigh shone into the marshy hollow of shadowclan, finally beginning to shift away from the muddy floor of the camp. it was a quiet hour of the day; the last wave of queens and elder warriors only just slipping from their dens, bumping heads and exchanging soft-spoken chirps and purrs to one another. the fresh-kill pile was stocked to maintain their hunger, collected on a hunting exercise morningpaw and her littermate had only just returned from. it was an expectable haul, for two young apprentices and a warrior, and the young tabby point watched the commotion around her kill pile with a little bit of pride, as well as hunger.
but as she eyed more and more heavy-bellied queens and the stiff, sharp-boned elders picking their share of the rapidly-depleting pile of lizards and small birds, she wondered if she'd get a share before the next patrol.
seated comfortably on her haunches, morningpaw contemplated the slight soreness in her muscles. she was definitely hungry, but it was never a very large haul of kill, anyway; there was only so much kill two apprentices and a single mentor could rake in for an early morning patrol. though morningpaw felt a little bitter not to have a pick of the prey she herself had helped catch, there wasn't much she could do about it right now.
taking her mind off of her stomach, morningpaw's thoughts wandered back to her morning patrol with duskpaw and their mentor.
an extremely enthusiastic apprentice, morningpaw was always an early riser, up before dawn and ready at once for a chance to leave the camp with her mentor. but there was no sight of fernheart at the mouth of the cave this morning; duskpaw, instead, stood with their mentor in the dim pre-dawn light, the other apprentice's tail curled inquisitively, looking engrossed in quiet conversation with their mentor. the big fluffy tom's eyes gleamed once towards morningpaw, cutting through the murky dawn air of shadowclan's camp. perhaps she'd been staring; her clanmates often remarked that she had a tendency to do so, but morningpaw never noticed, herself. duskpaw's mentor shifted quickly back to his apprentice, and the gray tabby glanced at morningpaw with a hint of excitement in their yellow eyes.
"my mentor said fernheart isn't available for apprentice training this morning," duskpaw spoke when they met halfway into the cave, careful not to wake the scattering of apprentices still sleeping in the dark morning hours. that explained it; duskpaw was never ready to leave with their mentor by now, and fernheart hadn't appeared at her usual time in front of the apprentice cave. she must've let duskpaw's mentor know before going off to do whatever she needed to do--duskpaw and morningpaw were long-time training partners, and rivals who balanced one other out well, duskpaw a faster, more patient and tactical opponent to their sister's tendency to barrel into everything head-on with her heavy defense.
"i thought you might like to come with us on a dawn hunting patrol," there'd been a kindness in duskpaw's eyes when they made the offer; of course, they and morningpaw were littermates and rivals, and they knew their sister wouldn't like spending the morning alone at camp if she could help it.
the voices of shadowclan cats were beginning to rise in volume, a few cats having ventured out to share tongues after the little meal. without her mentor available for training, there wasn't much morningpaw knew to.. do, in the camp. she wouldn't dare sneak out herself, and most of her fellow apprentices were probably off with their own mentors, by now. the kill pile was almost empty, now--somewhere in her thoughts, the elders had moved to their respective corners of the territory, and she could hear the excited mewls of kits from the nursery behind her, probably elated to have some of their first tastes of real prey. to morningpaw's luck, there was still a lizard or two left in the fresh kill pile, and she perked her ears excitedly, springing onto her paws with renewed energy. in her focus on breakfast, she neglected to avoid the muddy spots of the camp floor on her way to the fresh kill pile, dipping her forepaws and a hindpaw in muddy puddles she'd regret later.
a soft purr emitted from her throat as she dipped her head to examine her options--a scrawny looking lizard, and a plump little vole. stretching her neck over the raised dirt, morningpaw plucked carefully the fat little rodent from the once-aptly named pile, careful not to puncture it with her teeth. she'd be hungry again soon; best savor the juicy vole.
morningpaw weighted herself back on her haunches for support, briefly checking out the scattering of cats in her immediate view. the voices of shadowclan cats were beginning to rise in volume, a few cats having ventured out to share tongues after the little meal. without her mentor available for training, there wasn't much morningpaw knew to.. do, in the camp. she wouldn't dare sneak out herself, and most of her fellow apprentices were probably off with their own mentors, by now.
morningpaw's vole was getting soggy in her jaws. the big cream she-cat cat deigned to figure everything out after she'd had her meal, whipping around with perhaps more purpose than necessary--
--only to be met with a big pair of eyes less than a mouselength from her face.
morningpaw froze up as if she'd been caught in the act, the vole drooping limply from her mouth. there wasn't much the big tabby point apprentice could say with her mouth still full of a fat rodent.
