Starlingstep's odd colored eyes snapped open, but nothing could be seen. His sight seemed to be failing at last. Using his other senses, though they too seemed muted and dull, the old black tom knew it must be very late at night. The camp was quite and he could hear his companions deep even breaths of sleep. He knew this was coming, he had felt it in his bones the day before. The battle practice session that he never quite made it too had been a bad idea. Sure it was fun to get out of camp, but the short journey to the sadly hollow had snapped his strength and it took him nearly twice as long to return to camp as it had taken him to leave. He should have known he was too near death to try anything outrageously foolish. Training was for apprentices and young warriors. Not elders who were bored with their existence. It was a miracle Starlingstep had even made it back to camp at all.
Attempting to rise to his feet, the elder fell back into his nest as his hind leg collapsed under his weight. He felt weak, like a newborn fawn trying to stand for the first time. The comparison made Starlingstep grin, and then grimace. Unlike the fawn, this would probably be his last time standing. Hoping not to wake the other elders and bother them at such an hour, Starlingstep clenched his jaw against the pain and forced his legs to hold him. He felt is way over to the entrance of the elders den and pushed his way through. It took him a very long time to hobble across the clearing to the medicine cat's den. As much as he hated to wake them, or to let the little Peachpaw see him like this, but he needed the herbs that would help him move on and join Starclan without pain and the terrible terrible sight of his clan saying goodbye. He didn't think he could stand saying goodbye to everyone.
Pushing through the entrance of the den and sinking to the soft ground, Starlingstep called out to Blueberry and Peachpaw to come to him. He had meant to speak with Blueberyy about keeping her apprentice away, but had always but it off, even with death following him like a shadow. He knew that his would be a good learning experience for the little ginger shecat, but he still wished he could protect her from the cruel part of nature.
Blueberry? Peachpaw? I cannot see, I need you now. It is my time."
Starlingstep slowly rolled over onto his side and watched as his vision faded away completely. He was totally blind now. A slow and steady calm washed over him, he knew that it would be ok, that the medicine cat's would make him comfortable, and that his suffering was near the end.
"I wish to say goodbye to my friends. Please fetch the other elders before it is too late." The grayed elder spoke calmly and quietly. He closed his eyes and wondered what would await for him once his time was finally up.
