lynxchaser frowned. where the hell was he again? ah, who knows. in all of the days that knitted to become his life, he resided in the - admittedly gloomy and dark and creepy and all other synonyms of words previously mentioned - marshes and forestry of shadowclan. sadly, his experience in the area did not exactly add up to being knowledgeable enough to pinpoint his location, or really any other place that was not a fox-length or two away from the general vicinity of camp. “i swear, cats who always know where north is freak the living daylights out of me. must be some kind of special mushroom in their diets or something,” he mumbled, shaking his head. it was just plain weird. lynxchaser walked on with the hopes that he would at least have an indication of being close to camp by the time the sun sunk down into the horizon.

upon turning a corner he was at least 98% sure he had already walked before (like, twice now, but shush), lynxchaser happened to stumble by what at first he thought was a very large rat. relatively unfazed - i mean, honestly, every creature too ugly to prance about in sunlight lives here - but nonetheless sporting prickles all over his skin, lynxchaser made a face before approaching it because yes, apparently his arrogance left no room for common sense. luckily for him, the big black creature of the night ended up manifesting into rookjaw. and, in lynxchaser's honest opinion, was a pretty darn good descriptor for the older warrior. “rookjaw! fancy seeing you here. you look as amicable as an adder this fine afternoon, though i do suppose that's your regular look,” he tsked, “you really ought to change it up every now and again. i think the ladies - and the occasional gentleman, i mean you can't really be picky when it comes to admirers - are more inclined on fawning after the... what is it? oh! the 'cute and cuddly' fad, that's it.” oh, lynxchaser was almost thankful to the stars that he got lost. rookjaw was terrific company.. entertainment-wise that was. the male did have a bit of an attitude problem, but it was nothing lynxchaser couldn't shrug off.

rookjaw had just settled down to take an afternoon nap when, lo and behold, his favorite warrior just so happened to prance up to him, with that ridiculously stupid look on his ridiculously stupid face, indicating he had something ridiculously stupid to say. sure enough, lynxchaser immediately uttered something he no doubt thought to be devastatingly clever.

"ah, lynxchaser, as hilarious as ever!" the massive dusk tabby snarled, his words particularly cutting on the sarcastic 'hilarious.' "how lovely of you to grace me with your presence." he didn't move from his place in kitty loaf position, with big polydactyl paws tucked beneath him. he did flatten his ears however at the- alright, somewhat handsome- tom before him. ah, but why did he have to be such a moron?

"didn't realize you'd spent so much time checking me out, lynxchaser," rookjaw rumbled, annoyed with the younger cat. "but i suppose you are the expert, being so shallow as you are. thank starclan you gave me some tips!" he laughed derisively, though not with particular enthusiasm. he had a daughter, for starclan's sake. he wasn't particularly sensitive about his lacking mate. whitestone had succumbed only moons ago, after all... it was a bit soon to be moving on.

oh, what a day this was turning out to be. rookjaw was a favorite of lynxchaser’s, always so easy to rile; it was probably written in stone somewhere that the striped-faced warrior found great sport in pushing his colleagues’ buttons, see how far underneath their pelts he could get and drawing out right at the brink of a physical altercation. it got him all hot and bothered and alive, definitely. “why, thank you! i do strive to be an entertainer. it helps to keep good company,” he delivered, honey-smooth voice perchance sounding like claws against rocks to rookjaw.

it was sort of a mystery how lynxchaser felt about being able to look down at the dark-furred tom in the literal sense, but one could guess that he reveled in it. other than it giving him the illusion of having the upper paw, lynxchaser used the vantage point to luxuriously show off his moonlight-shaded pelt. “darling, it took you this long to notice? in the right lighting, you can be a little more presentable than the carrionplace rat i actually thought you were, like, ten seconds ago. it would be an insult to my name if i didn’t let a pretty thing catch my eye, even if only for a blissful moment. but anyway, i was got the impression it was the other way around.” he flashed rookjaw a toothy grin as a reciprocation for his oh-so-heartfelt thanks. he stretched out his forelegs, arching his back and neck in an innocent pose - “i have a little kink in my back, hold on, and i am also assuming you’ll be making no attempt to help, the prince charming that you are.” - blue eyes sliding shut for a second before he returned to a stand.

the saltiness increases, part 2 / ??

the big dusk tabby ignored lynxchaser's smoothly delivered line (who did he think he was, the leader at a gathering?), and rolled onto his back, baring a long, furry stormcloud gray belly. he wasn't going to give the younger warrior any satisfaction in thinking he was putting rookjaw on edge. he closed his eyes and relaxed, using all his patience, which had been garnered from his time as mate and father. it wasn't much, but at this moment, it was more than enough.

rookjaw merely snorted as the arrogant tom went on about how he had thought him to be a carrionplace rat, of all things. eyes still close, he growled, "it's such a shame that you're losing your sight, lynxchaser. so young to be forced into early retirement." he sighed wistfully. "i suppose it's a burden you have to bear for those bright blue eyes you so cherish," he murmured, beginning to relax in the warm light of his chosen napping place.

"ah, yes, you noticed, did you?" rookjaw breathed, still relaxed in his incredibly and intentionally vulnerable position. what did a cat so massive as he have to be concerned about, from an arrogant half-crazy tom like lynxchaser? "i absolutely yearn for you, lynxchaser," rookjaw mewed, voice gravelly as the sarcasm rolled off his tongue. "i was absolutely devastated when i discovered that the only one you have the ability to love- pity, really- is yourself."

as the tom apparently worked a "kink" out of his neck, rookjaw huffed through his nose and rolled onto his side. "not that i'm not thrilled to have you interrupting what was otherwise a very pleasant nap," he rumbled, opening one eye to look upward at the pale tom, "but is there some particular reason you're bothering me?"

lynxchaser widened his eyes in mock horror, left paw coming up to paw at one eye. “that’s dreadful! though, perhaps, all is not lost,” he gasped, making sure to amp up the hope in his voice that one would almost think he was an optimistic child, “i could sacrifice the life of a warrior, and as an elder, be forever admired, so that the clan can live on knowing i’m still around with my beauty. oh, how cruel the world is to put such heavy responsibilities on us, but someone has to do it, don’t you think, rookjaw?” lynxchaser emitted an overly-done sigh, shoulders slumping and head lowering for a moment before he threw away that façade and donned another.

the almost-white tabby warrior purred gratuitously, “of course i noticed! it’s such a common occurrence that it irks me when it doesn’t happen. well, that and the fact that my observational skills are top-notch!” lynxchaser made a dismissive noise, shaking his head. if he had human hands, he’d be putting one on his hip and the other daintily pinching the bridge of his nose. but, alas, he could only do so much with his body language. “while it’s no secret that i do have certain affections for myself—how else will you love another if you can’t admire yourself first? and i am a very appealing feline to start with if i do say so myself—keep an open mind, darling,” he mewed and nonchalantly shrugged his shoulders, “who knows? i might just have enough space in my heart to allow another into it.” he gave the large dusky tom a suggestive wink. lynxchaser turned away from him, taking his sweet time getting the invisible specks of dirt off of his immaculate pelt.

“bother you? why, i’d never do such a thing, rookjaw. i simply came because..” i got myself lost in these blasted woods, and there isn’t even pretty scenery to fawn over in the meanwhile, “i couldn’t ever fathom passing up an opportunity to talk to you.” and by talk, lynxchaser really meant push to his patience’s end.

[attr="class","mouths1"]as the nightmare that was lynxchaser's soliloquy came to an end, thank starclan, rookjaw tried to quell his rising disgust. the arrogant, annoying, aggravating... so much came to mind. yet he closed his eyes and tried to pretend as if the tom weren't still, in his irritating voice, speaking to him. or really, at him. it was the worst characteristic, a cat who spoke at you as though to a tree, rather than anyone capable of response. by now, though, rookjaw was nearly rendered incapable. at the very least, he didn't give two mouse tails what was being said nor did he care much to continue the conversation.

"...and i am a very appealing feline to start with if i do say so myself—keep an open mind, darling,” the dusk tabby tuned in just long enough to snort derisively at the statement. "what heart? all i see is your unhealthily large head. have you seen sparrowpelt about that, or is it merely a birth defect? it really must make it difficult to stay upright." rookjaw rumbled cooly, noting the tom's pause before his obnoxious companion prattled off more nonsense. “i couldn’t ever fathom passing up an opportunity to talk to you.” he rolled his eyes and at last got to his paws. "how nice to have friends," the big warrior said dryly. "it's been great, but i heard lavendertail complaining of ticks this morning, and while i just can't bear the thought of leaving you..." abruptly, big, six toed paws made to crouch and rookjaw sprinted off, not toward camp but deeper into the forest- ah yes... there it is... he'd smelled the gritty, damp scent from his napping spot; the shallow mud puddle just a bit behind lynxchaser. without heed, the warrior leaped into it, kicking back with his hind paws to send a spray of mud in the other cat's direction. thoroughly covered in it himself, rookjaw streaked off deeper into the woods.

whether the prissy tom gave pursuit or not, rookjaw didn't look back to find out. he used his big frame to his advantage, throwing himself over fallen logs and through swampy patches.
