you think that life is one big game

Maplepaw was—for the first time since she’d added the “paw” to her name—out alone in the forest. This was an inevitability—okay well, admittedly she’d rather be with Lambpaw but still—because the young molly had what some might have considered the healthiest curiosity of any cat. Or well, her parents had liked to say that. POINT WAS—she was out hunting, and for the moment she didn’t even have Lambpaw to back her up. It did make her nervous—what if they were drifting apart despite what Lambpaw had promised?—but it was she who’d set out. If it was anybody’s fault that she was off on her own it was her.
The tabby-and-white cat was walking with a pronounced flounce to her step. “Hunting” was a very strong word for what she was doing. She was sorta keeping her eyes out for prey. She was also sorta just enjoying the weather and also sorta just working the energy out of her paws because sitting back in camp was so boring. It was beautiful out, she couldn’t just ignore the call of the wilderness!
It was as she was thinking this that a rabbit suddenly exploded out of the undergrowth in front of her. Her tail shot up in surprise, and the rabbit—startled by something else that had sent it her way—literally ran right into her. “AAAH!” Maplepaw was suddenly falling backward under the fluffy weight of a rabbit—instinctually she hooked her claws into its pelt and it screamed as she rolled over and pinned it underneath her.
The rabbit went very still and was staring up at her with terrified eyes. Maplepaw stared back at the rabbit and felt her heart suddenly twist in sympathy—of course it made sense that prey was scared of her. After all, cats ate rabbits. Nervously she pulled her claws back in, but kept the bunny gently pinned beneath her paws, “It’s okay—haha! You scared me little guy, aww you’re kinda cute when you’re not sitting in front of me as my dinner.”
The rabbit said nothing (of course) and did nothing, only twitched its nose in abject horror at this cat who was—for whatever reason—attempting to strike up a friendly conversation with it. Maplepaw gently ran her tail over the rabbit’s soft fur, and purred, “No no honest you’re okay! I’m not gonna hurt you! It’s okay!”
So much for hunting.
