Lambpaw awoke with a jolt.
at first his vision was muddied, a mesh of bright colored spots dancing and twirling before his pale green eyes. for the briefest of moments everything felt foreign and strange, as blurry shapes began to form more distinctive figures before his narrowed optics.
it struck him like a bolt of lightening - that harsh buzz of excitement and fear and nervousness and uncertainty all rolled into one tight, compact ball. his vision clearing at once, he scrambled to his paws, chest heaving and paws itching with the very thought of the long day that lay ahead of him. "maplepaw!" he meowed sharply, "why didn't you wake me up?" but it seemed his identical sister had already scampered off - of course she had - and all was unusually empty and quiet within the apprentice's den.
he felt slightly disappointed; he'd wanted to experience his first day of training with his sister at his side. but no longer did the two reside in the nursery; mentors had different schedules, different plans, and it already seemed like they were being pulled apart. he sighed, what felt eerily similar to a stone weighing down at the pit of his stomach...but the bitter emotion couldn't last long.
he heard a scampering of paws outside the den, a reminder that his first day as an apprentice stretched out before him! his heartbeat quickened, excitement clouding his mind like a fog; what lay beyond the camp in the territory now openly accessible to him? did the big wild cats roam the forests, like in the elders' tales? were there savage beasts awaiting underground, ready to strike and drag a strange cat down into its burrow for an untimely demise? these exaggerated rumors and mysteries only heightened his growing excitement. the tomcat wasted no time in bursting from the apprentice's den, and catching sight of his assigned mentor, barkstep.
"hey, barkstep!" he forced himself to calm down - be still my beating heart. starclan forbid, anyone saw him and they'd think he was some sort of three moon old kit. which he wasn't. he was plenty mature, and he was ready to prove this to barkstep. he could handle anything in his way!
