Webpaw couldn't keep still. He was buzzing with excitement from the moment he woke up because today, oh today was special. Things had been so hectic lately, what with the Gathering, Onyxfeather being made deputy and Greypaw joining the clan. All of these things had happened on the back of one another and in short left Rosestar busy and tired quite often. Of course Webpaw hadn't minded, he'd tried to be understanding. After all, when your mentor was the leader of all of ShadowClan, well it was natural she would be busy but that didn't stop the small tom from being excited when she promised him one whole day of undivided attention. As soon as she had said it Webpaw had tried not to look jittery or over excited because he was more than halfway through his apprenticeship, he should had some self control after all. Rosestar expected a lot from him and Webpaw wanted to deliver and that meant acting mature when he got good news. That meant smiling and nodding while inside he felt like bouncing around like a kit.
So, this morning Webpaw had woken up especially early, when the horizon had barely started to blush with dawn light. He'd slipped out of the apprentice den, despite Blossompaw's sleepy attempts to reclaim his belly for her pillow. He'd ended up leaving with her curled up in his nest, burrowed into the moss and feathers, snoring softly while Spottedpaw fidgeted sleepily at the new sleeping arrangement. Webpaw felt bad, and a bit sad to leave because he loved curling up with his best friend but he'd make it up to her tomorrow. Today, oh today Webpaw was a cat on a mission. He'd slipped into the clearing, stolen a quick mouse to appease his rumbling belly, given his tabby pelt a quick groom and bounded out of camp in the hazy dawn light. Rosestar had told him to meet her at dawn in a clearing south of camp and Webpaw was not going to be late.
Moving through ShadowClan's territory, Webpaw tried to keep as quiet as the shadows. This time of day was his favorite, when everything was a bit off color and the shadows stretched lazily over the valleys and ravines that were dug into ShadowClan's forested territory. It was always cooler during these early hours and the grey light made Webpaw's silver tabby pelt almost perfect camouflage. So, as he made his way to their meeting place, Webpaw practiced his stealth. He tried to keep his steps light, using the carpet of pine needles to silently creep over the twisted tree roots and pebble-strewn ground. It took a bit longer, moving in this mindful way, but it helped soothe some of the fidgety excited energy that had coursed through Webpaw since last night. It made him focus his energy, gave him a task that required thought rather than the tempting option of just running to the clearing without paying attention to what was going on around him. So, by the time Webpaw slid into the clearing from the brush, he felt calmer, centered. Amber eyes flickered around the clearing but Rosestar was nowhere to be seen.
'Doesn't mean she's not here,' Webpaw thought, ears twitching atop his head as he strained to hear his mentor's approach. Gaze skimming the low branches of the trees surrounding the clearing, Webpaw tried to find even a glimmer of his mentor's brilliant red-brown fur. Parting his jaws, Webpaw breathed deep, tasting the pine and cedar that permitted ShadowClan's territory. There was a soft hint of moisture in the air, mist and fog collecting in the darker parts of the territory, dew cold under Webpaw's feet. He couldn't find Rosestar's scent but...he did have the distinct feeling he was being watched.
