Having a new mentor was a strange experience, Littlepaw decided, his attention glued to his front paws as he carefully placed one right at the toes of the other, balancing on an invisible line the best he could. Of course, his tail flicked and swished behind him, never tamed, only alive, and his body swayed, but he was determined to get his balance right. Alligatoreye was kind of cool, he supposed, he had a good sense of humour at least and seemed pretty fun. But he was also a big cat, and a bit intimidating to the little gray and white tom. Hopefully that would pass, he didn’t really like the idea of cowering at his mentor’s paws for the next so many moons.
Then again, why was he so scared of Alligatoreye? His last mentor hasn’t been much different, a haughty tom with good attitude, who’d just unfortunately gotten a bit too old to mentor a younger cat. He even looked similar to his new mentor. Littlepaw’s tail flicked a few times back and forth, as he took a few quick shuffles forward, slowly approaching the undergrowth and rocks of the camp wall. His ears could vaguely pick up the sounds of the river bubbling their way around the camp. Blinking a few times, the tom glanced around the camp, checking his back for anyone approaching, before focusing on his paws again.
Maybe it was time that he took the initiative. Maybe he needed to be the one to say something about what he wanted to achieve with his life. If he told Alligatoreye what he wanted, maybe that would make him less scary to talk to as a whole? The little tom considered it for a moment. But what did he want? Was he saying too much? A few more steps forward eventually had his balance giving way, and with a squeak, he tumbled onto his side, paws flailing. He gave a loud huff, frustration immediately flaring in his chest. Maybe then he could work on his balance without needing to be worried that nerves would shake him off the fences at the edge of the fields.
The tom rolled onto his stomach, and dropping his chin onto his paws, tail curling against his side, gaze finding the leader’s den. Then again, maybe he had the right cat to ask. The idea formed, and blossomed quickly, and almost as soon Littlepaw was back up, and making a beeline toward his father’s den. “Magpiestar!” He called as he reached the entrance, only to come to a pause. What if he was busy or not there? The thought was enough to bring the gray and white tom to a halt, nose wrinkling. “Can you help me…?” He finished, voice growing quieter with his each. After a moment, he stepped forward, and stuck his nose into the den, peering inside.
