Blackness. Feeling. Breathe in. Breathe out. Tranquility. Utter peace.
The sound of distant fighting broke the trance and encouraged Songpaw to open her eyes. Her peaceful moment had, yet again, been disturbed by her rambunctious brothers. As her golden eyes opened, the sudden movement of the kit had caused a nearby bird to flutter away. Little did that scared bird know, she would rather be its friend way before she would ever eat it. She looked down from her perch to see what exactly was going on beneath her. Her brothers, Jaypaw and Pepperpaw, practiced their “warrior’s dance”. They were just rolling around on the ground screaming and clawing at each other. Songpaw shook her head and looked out towards the horizon. Apprenticeship. She could hardly believe she had made it this far. 6 moons. At a young age, she remembered always being told she might not survive until apprenticeship. That some beast or sickness would take her life. That she had to toughen up to become a warrior. She believed them. She tried and lived every day like it was her last. She laughs at that thought now. “I’ll be a strong warrior one day”, she thought to herself.
As Songpaw got completely lost in her thoughts, she didn’t even sense her brother, Jaypaw, attempting to perform a sneak attack. One step too hard on the branch, caused Songpaw to jump into action. She spun around and charged her brother at full speed. Jaypaw squealed as he slide down the tree with outstretched claws. Songpaw, smaller and quicker than her brother, reached the bottom at the same time as him, and she immediately pinned him. She raised her paw, her claws glistening in the sunlight. “Songpaw.” Flowercloud, her mother, spoke and snaped her back to reality. She slowly stepped off of her brother. Looking guilty, she looked to her mother. Pepperpaw, who was giggling after watching the whole thing, sat next to the other siblings. Flowercloud gazed at her children and said, “You will all be warriors one day, for this clan, forever and always. Recite the warrior code to me.” Songpaw gladly stated all fifteen warrior codes with pride, faster than the boys could get passed the first code. Flowercloud dismissed them to their mentors and asked that they don’t come back to her until they are full warrior cats.
As the kits walked away, completely focused on their path to come, Songpaw looked towards the borders. Her mentor, Tailchaser, didn’t even come to her ceremony. She knew who he was as soon as he was chosen to be her mentor. The outsider who selected our clan to call his home. He was such a mystery to her. She’s watched him leave the borders. Nobody leaves the borders unless ordered to. “Maybe that’s why he didn’t come to my ceremony”, she thought. “He was trying to teach me some kind of warrior lesson.” That lesson, she did not know. Yet. Songpaw looked towards the sky and watched a hawk ascend towards the clouds. Let the apprenticeship begin!
She bounded in the direction of where Tailchaser might be.
