RABBITLEAP
410 words for redstar
He had dedicated far too much time to a rather trivial pursuit. Or, perhaps, it was simply what others would have considered trivial. He had seated himself just outside the Warrior's Den, eyes narrowed and lips pursed thoughtfully. With a remarkable diligence, he scanned every available patch of grass, searching for the elusive perfection. Over his life, Rabbitleap had formed a distinct conception of what exactly constituted the perfect patch of sun, for the purposes of snoozing of course. It couldn't be too near the camp entrance, for then one ran the risk of being chosen as a last minute addition to a patrol. It wasn't that he sought to shirk his responsibilities, rather to simply enjoy a short nap in the fleeting sunlight. Neither could one choose a place too close to any den or overhang. These were the tools of shade. The sun's path across the sky would bring it shifting across the earth. The perfect spot was placed such that it enjoyed light for the maximum amount of time. Of course, ideally one hoped that such a place would happen to fall across thick luxurious grass. In the most desperate of cases, dirt would do. Such was the complex nature of planning the perfect nap.
Rabbitleap had indeed planned for his perfect nap. He had surveyed his available positions. When he'd narrowed it down to a few final options, he'd been obliged to test each one to make a final conclusive decision. His decision made, he'd settled down a short distance from the Nursery. His jaws gaped in a massive yawn. He curled in on himself, his tail drooping easily over his nose. He appeared, for all the world, to be a large hairy stone, unmoving and utterly content. He began to lose himself in those silly thoughts, those ones that flitted through the mind on the way to unconsciousness. He'd wondered whether he would have enjoyed being an actual rabbit. He concluded in the negative, as the length of the hind legs seemed far too inconvenient for napping. If one could not nap, what would they enjoy in life? His mind was beginning to go silent, the weight of sleep descending on him, when his name - seemingly from afar - penetrated his peace. He opened his eyes, raising his head with a heavy blink and a stretching yawn. His wits were still gathering, still feeble as he wondered who could have possibly disturbed this most perfect rest.
we never quite thought we could lose it all
