It was with long, slow steps that Patchpelt dawdled his way through the camp entrance, carefully pushing his head into the top edge of the tunnel, and brushing his side along the edge, the thorns and twigs catching on his and giving a satisfying scratch along his skin. He would never be a cat who moved quickly, and right there and then it showed, the final catch of the day, a large water vole, hanging from his jaws. Slowly, he moved forward, bright gaze sweeping the camp for any signs of his sister, but it seemed like Marshfrost was still out doing whatever she was planned to do. He hadn’t been paying too much attention to her muttering that morning.
Didn’t matter! He had someone else to see, someone ever so slightly more important than his sister. Well, in one way anyway. He couldn’t say that to her face. So, instead, he let his paws slowly move in the direction of the nursery, a yawn on his tongue, but not quite making it out around the vole. Instead, his nose wrinkled and ears flattened, and he pushed the air out around the prey, pausing his movement part-way through in order to finish the yawn, and give a sharp shake of his head. All the hunting made him want to sleep for a week, it felt like.
Patchpelt pushed on, gaze sweeping the cats that flowed through the camp like water, the sun bleeding down through the pines and undergrowth and across the clearing, lighting up what seemed to be every little space around. It would only be at sunhigh that so much light flooded in. Every other time of the day, they remained shaded, even as the blue sky stretched far overhead. For a moment, he was distracted by it, and a few birds fluttering their way overhead, but, another head shake had him back on track. Right, nursery. Reaching the entrance, he shoved his nose inside, ears immediately tuning to the noises of kits and mothers chatting away within the large space.
His eyes were for one she-cat though, and one only, and immediately his face lit up as he approached Doverain, a purr immediately rumbling in his chest. “I brin’ wit’ ‘ee a ‘eace off’ing!” He meowed around the vole, before bowing deeply at the she-cat’s paws, and letting the prey drop to the ground. He didn’t stand straight away, just looked up, giving a grin. “Am I allowed to stay in your presence? Or am I banished back to the clearing?”
