Questions tumble and roll from Twotone as the younger tom takes a bite of the magpie. They are nervous questions, chasing one another end over end until they're all tangled together into one giant question that rings through Webpaw's mind: What's going to happen to me?
The unspoken question rattles around in Webpaw's mind and shakes the silver tabby because in all his life that has never been a question that plagued him. Born into ShadowClan from respected parents, taught the clan ways from day one and told stories of StarClan since he could begin to understand them, Webpaw had never questioned. The trials he faced, the ceremonies he sat through, they were all explained and expected, safe and secure in his mind as gateways to progressing through life. Even as he sat, nervous and excited, for his apprentice ceremony Webpaw had known he was safe. No matter who his mentor was, he was going to be in good paws, nurtured and taught in the tradition of all wild clans. The fact that Rosestar had become his mentor was merely a bonus born from his early bond with the ginger leader. She never would have let him be mistreated by a poor mentor and even now, the task Twotone had interrupted tonight, was merely another trial many cats had done before him. Midnight hunting under the watchful gaze of a mentor, merely a test to see if he was ready for the next phase in training. Twotone didn't know that. He didn't know the stories, the customs, the words to say or laws of the land.
Webpaw's heart went out to the younger cat because in the moonlight, tucked up small, Twotone looked young. He was not so much younger than Webpaw but surrounded by strange smells, strange cats and a world he knew nothing about...Shifting just a bit, Webpaw pressed his flank against Twotone's plush fur.
"There are other clans," Webpaw began, speaking softly and slowly, keeping his pace steady in the way he'd learned from Rosestar when she was teaching him clan history. "This is ShadowClan, we roam the pine forests and marshes but there's also ThunderClan, SkyClan, RiverClan and WindClan. We share borders with them but we contest for food and territory. The clan Rosestar mentioned is StarClan. When cats in any clan die but lived good lives and served their clans well they join StarClan as...spirits. They guide the clans to maintain peace by talking to the medicine cats and leaders in dreams. If StarClan didn't want you to be here they would have sent us a sign to send you away but...I don't think that's happened."
Amber eyes drifted away from Twotone and up to the moon hanging high in the sky. It was a mere sliver of silver surrounded by the watchful stars. The Gathering, only a few days gone still echoed in Webpaw's bones. All the cats of all the clans gathered together as their leaders shared news, their pelts and scents mingling into one huge clan. Moonlight-washed, jewel-toned eyes turned to the four most powerful cats in all the clans as StarClan watched on. Surely such watchful ancestors would send a sign if Twotone was truly bad for ShadowClan? Looking back to the younger tom, Webpaw flicked Twotone's side with his tail.
"StarClan gives us our names," he continued, nipping a bit off of the magpie. "We have two part names, a suffix and a prefix. We're named for a lot of things...usually appearance but sometimes other things. The suffix in our names tells what rank we are. Kit names always end in kit, apprentice names end in paw and warrior names end in lots of things depending on your skills. Leaders end in star because they are chosen by StarClan. Leaders hold ceremonies to name kits into apprentices and apprentices into warriors but StarClan holds a special ceremony to make a deputy into a leader. So, as you grow up your name grows with you." Webpaw offered a small smile. "Naming ceremonies are fun, I promise. And Rosestar will give you a good name."
