MAGPIESTAR

Magpiestar was, in fact, sound asleep. It wasn't a graceful sleep, nor a kingly majestic sleep. It was the most honest kind of sleep - loud and unruly. His long fur was a bit dissheveled from tossing and turning. Bits of twigs and reeds clung to his fur in different places. Though that was probably due to his nest. It was a haphazard sort of thing, thrown together with limited care. He'd only forced himself to make it to replace the one he'd destroyed, the one he'd had for moons, the one he'd shared with Willowbreeze. But now he had something new, which was in desperate need of a feminine touch. For the moment, it suited him fine. His back was to the lichen curtained entrance of his den, his chest rising and falling with each deep breath. His breathing echoed against the stone walls, bordering on a snore though the old tom would never admit to such a thing. His face was buried deep in his paws, his left ear flicking occasionally in his sleep. Darkness was complete, especially in the enclosed den. The only shadows were cast by the bravest rays of moonlight which somehow wound their way through the stone.

Magpiestar began to stir at the sound of light pawsteps on the tail end of a crash of thunder, then truly stirred at the press of warmth against him. Well, it wasn't entirely a press - more of a desperate tackle. But rather than start awake, rear up in surprise, or lash out at the possible intruder, a soft smile floated onto his lips. Those light little steps, the milky scent always mixed with lingering herbs, was beautifully familiar. He cracked open an eye, a sleepy purr rumbling in his throat as his youngest child settled himself in. He rolled slightly, shifting to curl around the tiny tom. Even at six moons, an apprentice with every right, he was a small fragile creature. Magpiestar curled around him as if the simple action, his own massive body, could protect Littlepaw from everything in the world. It was a ridiculous notion of course, but he entertained it all the same. He lifted his head slightly, giving Littlepaw a comforting lick to the ear before lowering his head again. He was still drifting, somehow half-asleep. Though with good reason, it had been many nights since Magpiestar had enjoyed a true rest. He murmured, his deep rumbling voice quiet in Littlepaw's ear. "Hush, my son, hush. I'm right here." He nuzzled his child, his words playing on the edge of a yawn.
