As Blackwolf’s first agonized scream split the air, Rowanfrost was just returning from a hunt, a pair of fieldmice dangling from his jaws. They never made it to the fresh-kill pile, however, as the scene unfolding in front of him made his mouth fall open in shock – Blackwolf, bent over wretchedly over a smaller body that had been laid out at Beetleberry’s feet. Recognition jolted him – it was the medicine cat’s apprentice, Flurrypaw. Blackwolf glared death at Beetleberry, her words so venomous that even Rowanfrost flinched back, but Redstar quickly appeared on the scene, making promises that, whoever was responsible for this death, they would pay. With a grim growl that stuttered up from his chest, Rowanfrost got the impression that WindClanners were going to be doing a lot of fox hunting in the coming moons. First rogues, now foxes – didn’t they have enough trouble to be dealing with already? Not wanting to disturb the grieving mother, he kept his distance respectfully, his head bowing heavily under the weight of his own grief. Take her in, and keep her well, he prayed silently, raising his eyes to the heavens where the stars would soon shine.post is meh but I wanted to get these two in here.••••••••
The commotion roused Acorncloud from his nest, and he gave Greywind an impatient prod – they had been on patrols all day, and had been taking some well-deserved rest…but it sounded like something important was happening. More important than catching up on sleep. Scrabbling out of the den and into the open air, the brown tabby gawked ungracefully at what he saw. No! He had never been close to Flurrypaw, but, given her position, there was no cat in the Clan who didn’t respect her. How could this have happened to someone of her station? What had she been doing that she would have put herself in the path of a fox? Hurrying forward to slide in among the growing crowd of mourners, the tabby crouched respectfully near Flurrypaw’s body. He didn’t dare get too close – Blackwolf was still nearby, and still looked torn by despair, and Mallowpaw had joined her older sister, burying her face deep into her fur, as though by closing her eyes she could make this terrible tragedy undo itself. Closing his eyes and bowing his head, Acorncloud saw Asphodelpaw appear clearly in his thoughts, still the smiling little tom he had been the day he died. Watch over her in StarClan, brother.
