She didn’t want to listen, to acknowledge what was happening behind them, as paws slammed against the ground, rustling the undergrowth, shoving it from around their small shapes. The yowling, the snarling, the unfamiliar noises of battle tore at the air, ripped through ears, and Tinypaw felt every high-pitched noise like a lash across the heart. Her small paws didn’t want to go any faster, and she was barely aware of Ravenpaw’s form beside her beyond the fact he was there and Falconstr was not. No, the leader was behind them, fighting a battle he shouldn’t have needed to. A battle they got him into.
Yet, it was the snarl, and the sharp, sudden squeal that pierced harder than any other. Ravenpaw’s black frame disappear from her side, and Tinypaw swung around, in time that through the low branches, from an angle no larger cat could have seen, she saw the leader’s large, dark striped form hit the ground, the badger on top of him. A small squeak of horror escaped the she-cat’s throat, as sudden silence swamped the air. Her breath was short, forced, nose wrinkling, and ears flattening hard against her head. Her whole body lowered into the ground, tail dropping against the leaf-covered ground.
"He...he did it. You see, Tinypaw. He killed the badger." Tinypaw couldn’t say a word. Not from what she could see. It was all false words of failed dreams that clung to the black apprentice’s tongue. Tinypaw’s body shook as Ravenpaw forced himself on, a useless babble, choking him. "That'll...that'll show 'em. That'll show those filthy mouse brains who really rules this forest!" Maybe he’d get up. Leaders had nine lives, right? Falconstar hadn’t lost any, right? For a moment, she thought she saw him move, but, his form was still, limp. Maybe if they just… "Come on. Let's go home."
Tinypaw didn’t feel his tail flick, not as she violently got to her paws, and started to move again. Maybe if they just got there! She took off at a charge toward the camp. Maybe if they just got someone… Maybe they could stop him losing all his lives! They just needed to get there.
