Sunlight glared down between the branches of the old oaks. It dappled across the forest floor, glowing along the very edges of each leaf and shining brightly into every little nook of the forest. Above, the clear blue sky reached out across the heavens, as rich as the sunhigh sun. It was really a day that showed how close Greenleaf was getting. Or at least, that was Tinypaw had head her father sprouting about it and she was happy to believe whatever he said about the good weather. It had a spring in the apprentice’s step as she moved through the roots and undergrowth, small paws moving with purpose through the leaves and rocks.
“Come on Ravenpaw! You slug!” Tinypaw swivelled her head around toward her black friend, peering into the shadows for him. She supposed that was one benefit he did have with a pelt like that, he disappeared so quickly in the deeper shadows of the trees. However, he really did need to keep up. Their adventure back to Snakerocks required the utmost attention and speed, especially given they were going right when the adders should be out and about. Tinypaw’s tail flicked thoughtfully as she ducked ever so slightly under a few leaves, a path other apprentices would have more effort to go under.
The solid soil below still felt cool and damp, small flecks of moss clinging into her claws as she unsheathed them, using the extra grip to shuffle over a few piles of leaves. The scents of the oaks were fading into the sharper tang of pines, swarming over the thunderpath and across the border. Through the trunks and roots, she could see the great branches of the great sycamore, sign enough they were close. Tinypaw slowed, ears pricking up as the trees thinned out, the sandy, smooth rocks glowing as the sunlight hit them up ahead. It was enough to bring the she-cat to a pause, and glancing back again for Ravenpaw.
She wasn’t going any further without him by her side, after all. Something tingled in her chest, and unsettled feeling at just being near the creatures hanging there, causing her movements to slow. There was a reason they were warned about them, after all. After their encounter with the creatures those few nights ago, she certainly felt their presence, as well. The she-cat let out a small sigh, bright amber eyes once more directed toward the rocks as she shuffled forward, carefully scanning the ground as she moved.
