#DEPUTY CEREMONY
720 WORDS

so say, "geronimo!" say, "geronimo!"
Whew, okay, this isn’t so bad… Duckstar thought, peering below. The Clan seemed so far away and it was a little disquieting to see a sudden strange distance yawning between them. Not just physically, since—y’know—she was on a big rock. But emotionally as well. She’d somehow pulled ahead of them and now here she was, their Clan leader. About to change the face of their Clan in the eyes of every other for the next coming moons. About to name their deputy and begin pushing RiverClan forward with her own little flair.
Some part of her was terrified, but another was actually sort of excited. Not in a greedy sense, just in the sense that it was going to be quite the experience. She knew this wasn’t going to be “fun” but she had the feeling it’d be the most rewarding thing she’d ever done for RiverClan yet. That nothing would compare to giving her life and service to her Clan as its leader—and knowing strongly that there were warriors that backed her too.
Some will take some convincing though, Duckstar thought with a twitch of her ears. She’d heard the protests after all. There was bound to be dissent. One pawstep at a time, she could do this. The she-cat took a steadying breath, and focused pale green eyes on the clearing below. Duckstar glanced in the direction of Hollykit, relieved that the young kit was there—along with her kin.
Warriors milled about and she found herself trying to pick out their familiar faces—and was immensely relieved when her choice for deputy was definitely present. The she-cat’s heart hammered in her throat. That was a risk in and of itself, especially considering the allegations against her. However, Duckstar couldn’t deny that she was inexperienced. She needed to have some cat that was older than her, that had—perhaps—commanded respect in the Clan once before.
She would not allow herself to doubt him. If she did so then the Clan would follow her into the same feelings. Duckstar closed her eyes, steadying herself for a heartbeat before flashing them open. She found her pale green gaze on Sootdash—Why not choose him for deputy? Urk, duh. Because you’ve already picked. Sootdash is a great cat, but he’s not your deputy.—and she dipped her head to him gratefully. At least she knew that some warriors would, without a doubt, stand by her side. Sharpfrost was likely in the same stance as Sootdash on the matter.
Duckstar waited a few heartbeats for things to settle, before squared her shoulders and stood a little taller. With a flick of her tail she cleared her throat, “We’ve got a bit to cover tonight! As you all know, I traveled with Magpiethorn to the Moonstone to be in the leadership ceremony. Before I continue, I’d like to thank him for his service to RiverClan as its nothing to sniff at. Thank you Magpiethorn, for all you’ve done for RiverClan.”
The she-cat’s tone was undeniably warm. She was grateful to him, even if she’d been thrust into this position with little training or warning. It would have been nice to at least serve as his deputy for a bit before she had to stand before the Clan in such a way. But that was in the past, she would look to the future.
"I'm here to serve as your new leader, and even though they're big paws to fill I'll not give up, you can count on it! I’ll be looking to all of you for your loyalty and support in the coming moons. It’s a big change, but we’re RiverClan! We got this,” Duckstar purred with delight. She nodded seriously. “So now that that’s outta the way, time for the important parts.”
The she-cat took a breath that swelled her chest. It felt as though her heart was going to burst for a few moments, but this would be fine. She believed in her choice, as long as she trusted in him then everything would be alright. She had to believe that.
“I say these words before StarClan, so that the spirits of our ancestors may hear and approve my choice,” Duckstar meowed solemnly. The words tasted even more foreign than the summons, these were so professional, but of course she was respecting her ancestors with them. Her green eyes flicked to Sootdash’s face again, briefly, before she lifted her gaze to the stars above and called out steadily, “The new deputy of RiverClan will be Whitewater!”
Duckstar turned her head down so that she could look at the tom she’d chosen. Whitewater may have stepped down with a hope of gaining more experience, but she hoped that—in the face of her own recent promotion—it would be clear to him just how valuable what experience he held would be to her. This is the right choice. I know this is the right choice. She felt a flair of undeniable confidence.
