There was something freeing about running after a violent storm. Heronpaw could still taste lightning on the springtime air even though the heavy clouds had rolled away and were now growling in the distance over Highstones. Blue skies were patched with straggling clouds but the heaviness of rain still hung over the WindClan moors. She could taste it with each breath, saw the sparkle of lingering raindrops as she bounded through waterlogged heather and gorse. The ground was soft and springy underfoot, moss blooming aggressively over every available bit of ground, fighting with the grass, loam and lichens. Firestorm didn't know she'd gone out so soon after the storm but that was okay. Heronpaw's uncle and mentor seldom cared if she did some extra hunting after training though hunting wasn't Heronpaw's goal today. She just wanted to stretch her muscles away from the prying eyes of camp. The storm had everyone cooped up in the tunnels for hours and frankly that was too much one-on-one time with too many people Heronpaw couldn't stand.
Bounding out into the moorland, Heronpaw loped her way toward the rabbit warrens. She wasn't particularly expecting to catch anything since the storm had only just passed but if any other warriors or apprentices saw her she would have an excuse for being out. And if anyone tried to bother her she could tell them she was hunting and could buzz off. Keeping up a brisk jog, Heronpaw was looking more at the mountains in the distance than paying attention to finding prey so it took her by surprise when a blur of brown appeared out of the corner of her eye. Bright green eyes snapped onto the form of a sprinting rabbit and without thinking twice Heronpaw abandoned her light jog for a full out sprint of her own. It was instinctual by this point in her training, to chase prey, especially when she accidentally startled it from cover. Firestorm would be clicking his tongue if he found out Heronpaw had been daydreaming instead of paying attention.
'Mousebrain!' Heronpaw thought, narrowing her gaze and pushing herself to run faster as the rabbit's white tail bobbed ahead of her. 'Why wasn't I paying attention? So stupid! Almost...almost got it!'
Heronpaw was just about to spring forward to sink her claws into the rabbit when the sound of grinding earth reached her ears. Before Heronpaw could gather a breath to yowl in surprise, the ground under her feet heaved and sunk away. In a shower of loose dirt, clots of mud and sandy moor earth Heronpaw tumbled down, turning nose over tail and rolling wildly for several moments until the world came to a sudden stop. When she came back to her senses Heronpaw found herself sprawled on her side, half buried in mud and soft dirt. A shower of dust rained down on Heronpaw's mud-streaked pelt, making her cough as she wriggled out from under the dirt that had fallen on top of her. When she found her feet, the young apprentice felt a sharp stab of pain along her left leg like the first time she'd run too much and ended up with a pulled muscle. She could stand on it but favored it. Nose wrinkled against the heavy scent of wet earth, the white and brown she-cat blinked grit from her eyes. Sunlight still fell on her but Heronpaw was now several feet down, the ground underfoot soft and shifting as Heronpaw stumbled to her feet, paws sliding in the mud and uneven ground.
Panting, heart kicking fast in her chest, Heronpaw stared at her surroundings. There was a hole in the wall of her new prison off to one side and another in another wall going in a different direction. If her heart had been racing before, now it felt like it was trying to bust out of her chest. She'd fallen into a tunnel but...it looked suspiciously too big to be a rabbit hole. Oh StarClan. Badgers. Had she fallen into an old badger sett? Was it abandoned? Feet sliding in the wet ground, Heronpaw tried to jump up the wall to climb her way to freedom. For a moment she thought it would work even as pain zinged through her left hind leg but as soon as her claws sank into the soft earth it crumbled and had her sliding back to the bottom of the hole. Grinding her fangs, Heronpaw glared at the edge of the hole. What was she going to do? No one knew she was out...not even Firestorm! How long would it take anyone to notice she was missing? Would they care?
Trying to swallow down the panic that bubbled at the back of her throat Heronpaw paced the circumfrance of her new prison. It wasn't much bigger than she was long from nose to tail tip. Though she sniffed at the tunnel openings Heronpaw didn't dare squeeze into them. Who knew what was at the other end? Sure one might lead to an opening or it might lead to a cave in...or cave in on top of her. Swallowing bile, Heronpaw curled up as best she could on top of the earth that had sucked her down. She licked her throbbing leg just for something to do, ears swiveling each time a hawk shrieked or a heavy wind blew.
"I have to think of something," Heronpaw murmured, using her fangs to break up some mud that had collected under her front claws. "I can't just stay down here..." Her green eyes had just started making circuits of the edge of the hole again, looking for a more solid place to jump, when the sound of approaching pawsteps made her perk her ears.
Notes: she's gonna be so embarrassed as soon as she sees her rescuer
