creeping, crawling desperately

Firewhisker woke with his heart pounding so hard that it made his breath tremble in his chest. He grimaced, pressing his nose into the moss of his bed and scrunched amber eyes shut tight. For a moment he just lay like this—in the darkness of the den, ignoring the rush of the world around him, trying to get lost in his own familiar scent. He didn’t feel like he’d slept at all, an exhaustion weighed down his limbs that lent a strange surreal edge to his unwarranted fear.
Good, Firewhisker thought with a twinge of frustration. The perfect way to start a day.
Judging from the noises outside the den it was actually getting later in the day. Firewhisker’s stomach lurched with panic—he probably seemed lazy. They probably all hated him for it. Great StarClan, why was this so hard? Just get up. Get up and face the day—it wasn’t like he didn’t do this sort of thing every morning. Come on, one pawstep at a time.
For a few heartbeats he didn’t think he’d listen to his silent encouragement. Then, gingerly, the warrior started to peel himself out of bed. He slunk toward the entrance of the warrior’s den like a cat might slink through enemy territory. Exiting the dark warrior’s den made his stomach drop, and Firewhisker busied himself with licking the fur on his chest.
Steadily the panic subsided into an uneasy feeling. Jumpy—yes, just like every day—but functional. A tired—if not relieved—sigh escaped Firewhisker’s mouth and he lifted his head. Should he try to find something to do? Maybe some cat was hunting, or needed some help around camp. He wasn’t an apprentice anymore, but the young warrior wasn’t afraid of doing a chore or two if it meant feeling… useful. Better than being a weird lump.
