she's got a solar-powered life,

A thought flashed like light glimmering off of water through her mind—Success!—in a brief moment. Her paws were wrapped around him tight, and for a moment it was like Squirrelfang was soaring with the tiniest success in the world. If any cat in the Clan saw her she might have been flustered and embarrassed in a single instant. She was not a cat that relaxed easy, that let the fire she burned with flicker into something used for warmth and comfort instead of pain. Squirrelfang would be, perhaps, baffled later at her behavior. The fact that she’d done it in front of another cat—Locustflight!—was stunning on it’s own. What was utterly wild about this scenario was that it was him that had done it. Had she been wrestling with any other cat she didn’t think she’d be in this place now.
Gleeful excitement coursed through her. The sort of playfulness she hadn’t felt since she realized she had teeth that set her apart from everyone else—different, dorky, weird—was lighting up the amber of her eyes. She felt like she could run into the sky, pounce on the sun itself, and send it rolling back to earth.
Locustflight’s fur was soft—creamy, warm and nice. She felt her paws flex, her stomach twisted strangely in her gut. As if she were excited to go on some big adventure, or like she was getting ready for a battle. Almost in reaction, her tail fluffed up—not aggressively. It was just puffed out because she was so excited. Excited to be close to him, though for a moment she was puzzled. Most cats would wrestle to get away—she’d planned on ending up pinning the cat—but he was shoving toward her. For a moment the she-cat swayed on her feet, taking an unsteady step backwards.
“Wha?” Squirrelfang gasped and then her words were snatched away by a mrrow as laughter spilled out of her. Gravity finally took hold and she tumbled backward. The world was a blur once more, but a single constant remained. Steady as a break in a storm, Locustflight with his paws wrapped tightly around her shoulders. She didn’t think they’d fly apart if she let go merely because of him—but that didn’t mean she let go. Not until they’d tumbled to the end, and she found her paws tucked underneath her chin.
A breathless laugh bubbled out of her throat. The she-cat couldn’t think of a time that she’d been completely vulnerable to another cat before—her whole life was a fight. She did not do what Locustflight had done earlier and lie on her back prone in front of her Clan-mates. There was a sort of gap that yawned between them that she wasn’t sure she’d ever be able to cross. Here, under Locustflight’s warm gaze—How can blue look so alive? So warm?—she didn’t think she had anything at all to fear.
“You great—mrraawr,” a purr broke out of her throat midsentence, scrambling her words with the vibrations so that she was resorted to laughter once more. She leaned up—a move that took a surprising amount of strength in the neck considering she’d been pinned by her playmate—and licked him right on the end of his nose. The gesture was painfully affectionate, her heart was swelling in her chest, and she felt suddenly flustered. “Pfft, you’re going to crush me at this rate. Off you lump! Off!”
Her tone was still light with laughter, but she felt warm on the tip of her nose and her ears. Maybe he hadn’t noticed? Okay, stupid. He definitely noticed. She licked his nose after all. You don’t just not-notice nose licks.
