Waking up early was not easy. In fact, it felt like the combined power of StarClan was keeping Shellpaw's eyelids closed. Vaguely half awake, Shellpaw tried to ignore the little voice in the back of her mind telling her she had to get up. Her nest was just so comfy! Tallpaw was snoring softly in the nest beside hers and against her back Shellpaw could feel the heat radiating off of Smallpaw. For being so little the she-cat put off a lot of heat and that warmth made Shellpaw even more reluctant to leave her den for the gusty pre-dawn camp. She knew as soon as she opened her eyes everything would be gloomy except for one horizon where the sun was making the horizon blush. The stars would still be speckled over the highest point in the sky and all throughout camp warriors, apprentices, elders, queens and kits would be tucked up in their nests fast asleep. Only the sparse nighttime sentries would be up still, their eyes glowing out of the gloom.
Still...the voice in the back of her mind reminded Shellpaw quite pointedly that Whitewolf had said to meet him at the river by dawn. If she wanted to be on time she would have to get up otherwise she wouldn't have time to eat. As though on cue her belly gurgled, reminding her quite pointedly that she'd been too tired to eat much the night before. Whitewolf was a serious warrior and a serious mentor. They trained hard, even though Shellpaw hadn't been an apprentice for long. It was usually ok since he could usually tell when Shellpaw was winding down and running out of energy but the day before had been long and tiresome for both of them so when they'd gotten back to camp Shellpaw had nibbled on a mouse and crawled into her nest. Now she had to crawl out of it.
Doing just that the mostly white she-cat stumbled blearily from her nest. Eyes only half open, Shellpaw stumbled her way over her denmates trying to not step on anyone's tails. It was a near miss for Rainpaw whom was curled up in front of the den entrance but Shellpaw managed to murmur an apology before stepping into the camp clearing. As she'd predicted the day was breezy, the air cool against her sleep-warmed fur. Putting her face to the wind, Shellpaw breathed in the scents of RiverClan mornings, letting the cool gust of wind chase the sleep from her eyes. It worked a bit, rousing Shellpaw enough to get both of her green eyes open. With both eyes open however...Shellpaw realized she was running late. The sun was starting to peek over the horizon already! With a yelp, Shellpaw wheeled around and dashed for the camp entrance, flying past the freshkill pile, bounding over the steppingstones that led off of the camp island.
Tail fluffed up in alarm and the morning sun chasing her back, Shellpaw bounded through the marshy reeds that decorated RiverClan's territory. A dove was startled by her passing and went fluttering into the sky but Shellpaw paid it no heed. She didn't have time to eat, hunt or be sneaky today, oh no. Whitewolf liked punctuality and usually Shellpaw was at least better about dragging herself upright in the morning. Not today. She'd spent too much time dozing. Leaping over a fallen log, the calico she-cat ran headlong into a bed of cattails beside a bubbling brook, running along the brook to where it fed back into the river. Once her paws hit gravely sand, Shellpaw slid to a halt, panting and looking around for her snowy white mentor. Surely he hadn't left already? She wasn't that late...Right?
"Whitewolf?" Shellpaw called, padding toward a weeping willow growing beside the river, it's flexible branches dipping into the shallow water. "Are you here? Sorry I'm late...I overslept."
