The first to reply to Minkpaw was Silvershade. Minkpaw tried not to visibly shrink away from the warrior, who she'd always found slightly intimidating, as she spoke, and the she-cat's irritation was evident in her voice. She stayed silent as Silvershade turned away from her and instead looked to Vervainpaw when she spoke as well. "We should stay here, if something happens we can always run back to camp and get someone." Minkpaw cast the other apprentice a slight, grateful smile when she made it clear that she agreed with Minkpaw, and nodded. "That sounds like a good idea," she replied in an equally soft voice.
The rest of the warriors, Whitewhisker, Spiderfang, and Stagstrider, each spoke afterwards, and Minkpaw could feel the mix of displeasure and contempt in each of their words. The she-cat's ears flattened in embarrassment when it seemed that Vervainpaw was the only one who shared her worries, and she uttered a quiet "I'm sorry" to the warriors. She still stayed rooted to her spot on the riverbank, though, as she watched the warriors, one-by-one, enter the river, but she grew less and less certain of herself. The warriors were probably right. Minkpaw was, after all, only an apprentice, and the warriors likely knew much more about these matters than she did.
Eventually, with a hesitant glance to Vervainpaw, Minkpaw began to slowly edge closer to the river. The thought of the cool water against her seemingly burning pelt was incredibly tempting, and each of the warriors who'd already entered the river looked much more comfortable in there than in the tropical temperatures she stood in now. She didn't want to trespass and potentially start a battle with another clan, but no one else, besides Vervainpaw, looked particularly worried. The apprentice was barely a paw-length away from the edge of the water when she saw that Whitewhisker had crossed over onto RiverClan's bank.
She halted then, a look of alarm settling on her face. Before, Minkpaw had almost convinced herself that it'd be alright to enter the river to just cool down in the unbearable weather, but now Whitewhisker was outright trying to provoke a battle. When he began his impersonation of Magpiestar, she was horrified at the attention he could be drawing, and she almost opened her mouth to speak out against it when she remembered most of the warriors' disapproval the last time she'd tried that.
"It's dreadful that you two would directly oppose a patrol Pinestar thought you two were obviously qualified enough to be on... What will he say when we report back that the two apprentices he trusted to help scout new territory were soft and weak?" Minkpaw's attention was temporarily drawn away from Whitewhisker when she heard Silvershade's voice again. As soon as she heard the words, a knot of fear began forming in her stomach. If Pinestar had truly sent them on this patrol to inspect the river, then Minkpaw couldn't fail him like this. Panic started to rise in her as she tried to imagine the consequences for being too cowardly to follow the leader's instructions, and she was almost convinced that she would have to swim in the river for the good of her clan.
It was, however, Silvershade's last words that pushed Minkpaw over the edge. Mouse-hearted. She tensed for a moment when she heard the insult, and the sneer on the she-cat's face wasn't helping either. Minkpaw finally stepped forward into the very edge of the river, almost defiantly, as if trying to prove Silvershade wrong. The step felt ridiculously momentous, like it marked some important change, when really she'd just stepped into a pawful of mud. Although it did feel cool against her skin, as she'd been expecting, she tried not to cringe at the feel of her paws sinking into the muck. The wet, oozing feel was disgusting.
But she'd still done it. She'd, at least partially, crossed into RiverClan territory. Minkpaw looked up towards the warriors, but mostly Silvershade, with an almost petulant expression on her face. "I'm not scared."
