“I’ll leave that one to you, he’s my Dad, remember?” came Tinypaw's light mewl, though Ravenpaw didn't miss the fleeting expression of fear that had crossed her countenance upon his silly little joke. he felt slightly guilty - he hadn't meant to frighten her - though that she took his words with a grain of salt only further cheered him on. He counted Tinypaw as a dear friend of his - what other cat would go along with his harebrained schemes and still mantain the effort to put up with him? They might've been polar opposites in personality, though that certainly didn't mean that they couldn't get along.
He hobbled to his paws, unwilling to give up his silly charade just yet. "Alright...I think I'm going to be fine," he forcefully huffed, unable to resist adding, "let's hope Mousenose doesn't find us now then! I bet he'll punish us by joining in." He grinned - for all his quips about Tinypaw's slacker of a dad, he did adore his mentor, even if he wasn't the most...efficient warrior there was. Mousenose was a dime a dozen and his rather lackluster care for what his charge was off doing allowed Ravenpaw many more illicit adventures than he deserved.
"It is pretty neat," Tinypaw breathed, and she began to pad away from the fluffy black tom. Ravenpaw finally resigned his feigned injury and followed the prim fae, his eyes roaming over every nook and cranny, every niche and crevice. Occasionally he could almost swear that a slinking shadow shifted ever so slightly at the edge of his vision, though by the time he'd looked the figure had disappeared, as if it were no more than a mirage...Perhaps it was just his rattling nerves. Of course, that had to be it! For all his ease at the apparent barren appearance of Snakerocks, it was hard to shake away the elder's tales of how it was constantly writhing with adders. It had to be an exaggeration - elders were practically famous for their gifts in storytelling - though there was still a slight nevous edge to Ravenpaw, as if he were being watched closely from the shadows.
He nearly bumped into Tinypaw's rump when she came to a sudden halt. He could hear her sharp intake of breath, as loud to his ears as the roar of a monster in this stagnant and quiet night air. "What is it?" he asked, his whiskers shoved forward and quivering in barely controlled anticipation. There was a mix of trepidation there too, an uncertainty, but it was the unknown and the danger that undeniably drew Ravenpaw forwards like maggots to carrion. Tinypaw had answered with her own question. “Uh, Ravenpaw? Do you know what that thing is?” He cast a glance at the pretty she-cat, his heart thumping and eyes stretching wider than he ever thought possible.
The body before him was hidden in the murky depths of the darkness, though occassionaly a shard of moonlight would pierce the dark and alight on a hazy green set of scales. Its breath rose and fell in the rhythmic manner of sleep; Ravenpaw was almost dissapointed by what he'd seen.
"That's it?" he meowed, slightly louder than before. He settled closer to the thing and drew in its scent - it didn't smell like anything in particular, just the crackling leaves of the forest and the underlying stink of its dry skin. He wrinkled his nose in distaste. He'd heard of cats eating these things, though it didn't smell like prey to him. "This is what the elders and warriors are so scared of? Look at it!" And with the slightest bob he - ever so gently - poked the creature on its head with a carefully sheathed paw. He took in the weighing silence of the moment as he drew back; with another mischievous smile he yowled out, in Tinypaw's ear, at the top of his lungs, "BOO!"
...Perhaps a bit too loud. Birds alighted from their trees as his echo carried far and wide. Immediately he flinched - had it reached ThunderClan camp? - but that was soon the last of his worries.
The adder finally drew up its head, fixing them in all with its pebbly dark eyes. Ravenpaw cast a guilty look at Tinypaw, his heartbeat suddenly quickening and his bravado diminishing. He'd done it now!
