JUNIPERNOSE
One more soul to the call, for all, in silence comes
Two more souls to the call, for all, and in time
If there was one thing Junipernose loved most about newleaf, it was the rain showers that washed over the trees, the raindrops spilling to the forest floor and soaking the earth. There was something so fresh and new about the forest after it rained; perhaps it was the way that the scents changed. Trees and shrubs alike were stripped of their natural scent while moss and soil had their own accented.
She could smell the rain just before it came- quickly she finished eating the sparrow she had picked out for her morning meal before scurrying back to the nursery, just in time for the first rain droplets to start falling. The queen sat right at the entrance, tail curling around her paws as she watched, safely sheltered from the shower but close enough to feel how it cooled the air. The canopies of the trees danced in the grey sky as their leaves became heavy with water; puddles quickly formed here and there on the ground, rippling with every drop.
The rain shower quickly passed, and they often did in newleaf. It was only then that Junipernose emerged from her den. Had she not been pregnant, she probably would have taken her walk while it was raining, but Chervilfoot taught her that as queens neared the date their kits would arrive, they needed to be more careful. With her own kits a half moon away, according to Stormbird, Junipernose could feel the time quickly approaching.
The she-cat slipped out of camp without being stopped. She did not intend to wander far, but she was growing tired of the den, and the chance to take a walk after a fresh rainfall was too enticing to pass up. Junipernose meandered around the trees, observing the way the rain streaked their trunks and enhanced the green mosses at their roots. Her grey paws carried her around the deeper puddles with ease, circling them like the ripples that marred their smooth surface. She could feel her muscles, tense from her time spent mostly in the nursery, start to relax and limber.
A large, cold drop of rain landed right on the top of her head. Junipernose shivered, pausing long enough to glimpse upwards at the trees with a vaguely accusatory look. She wondered if it was just a drop that happened to roll off of a leaf, or if it was going to rain again. Probably the former. No matter; nothing could spoil her mood right now.
