chipmunktooth would've liked nothing more than to idle about, messing with blizzardclaw and hanging playfully near Yewpaw. as it was however he had just signed up for a border patrol, and not all duties were fun and games. "I think it's about time we got going though. Which border are we patrolling?" blizzardclaw finally turned serious, his attention focusing on wolfheart, and chipmunktooth settled back with a huff.
"We're going along Shadowclan's, starting past Snakerocks and working our way to Fourtrees," wolfheart replied. "So we better get a move on or all the monsters will be up on the Thunderpath and we won't be able to hear a thing over them."
well, fun and games were now officially over, though that didn't mean all was lost. his belly was still gurgling loud for all to hear, and he was unashamedly looking forward to one thing and one thing only - filling his relentlessly hunger panged stomach. this was enough to lighten the sudden weight of his mood, and with an enthusiastic skip he bounded ahead, his tummy wobbling between his thick set of legs. "well come on then, lazy gusses! chop, chop, we've work to do!"
as the patrol slipped out of camp, and began to climb the ravine, the tabby tomcat immediately slowed to a pace, matching his step with yewpaw. he'd never been one for stamina, and this certainly showed every time he was forced to scramble up the ravine outside of camp. it was practically a dark forest punishment - at least to this slightly overweight warrior.
"Hey, chipmunktooth!" came yewpaw's voice; "you think we'll see any adders when we go by snakerocks?"
cHIPmunktooth couldn't keep the grin from his countenance. now here was something he could enjoy. "well of course! why else would it be called snakerocks? it's crawling with adders! once, when i was a tiny apprentice like you, my mentor made me hunt there, and guess what I caught?" before he could even reply, he answered the question himself. "a gigantic snake! bigger and longer than this entire patrol combined! it spat venom, but oh, uncle chipmunk was not afraid! he taught that moody viper a good thing or two about respect!"
maybe this wasn't entirely the truth, but chipmunktooth could not resist a good yarn - especially if it was one that exaggerated him in a good light.
