Rookpaw lifted her head from where she had placed it upon her crossed paws. A rustle of reeds caught her attention. Her ears pinned forward and her head quirked to the side, the best for her single working eye to see with.
The wind picked back up and the reeds rustled again - so it was only mother nature, tricking her. It wasn't Ott-- Well. It wasn't a cat. Rookpaw sighed and placed her head back down on her feet. Her fluffy orange banded tail curled up before laying back down on the ground.
The apprentice wasn’t one to fall on hard times. She was a perky, happy cat most of the time. Rookpaw knew how to smile even through hardships. Any cat who had physical or mental problems had to learn how to either smile through them, or bite harder. She was too small to bite harder, so smile it was.
But right now, watching the sun set and her clan-mates find snuggle down for the night, she found it hard to smile.
She was an apprentice without a mentor. What in the world did that make her? Was she really an apprentice with no one to teach her? Where had Otterfoot gone? … had he left because of her? Was she too much work, too much stress, not worth his time?
Surely not, he had told her time and again to try harder, fight longer, to show any nay-sayer that she could be the best fighter out there even with one eye. But...
Other apprentices peeked out at her from their sleeping area but left her alone. It was common knowledge that Otterfoot was gone, there was no mystery as to why Rookpaw lingered alone.
She hadn’t even eaten much of dinner, only a the rump of the rat chewed off and the rest cooling in the new-leaf setting sun. Rookpaw told herself to buck up, everything would be fine, a new mentor would be assigned to her but…
Rookpaw sighed and shifted her head upon her paws, whiskers brushing up against her half-eaten dinner.
