the coals are beginning to glow
when it's all said and done, we'll shine like the sun
a warm wind ruffled near-black fur speckled with bright orange patches, drawing a contented yawn from the tom whose belly was bared to the glow of the sun. pumpkinpatch lay on his back a fox-length or two from a small pool, warming himself on the surrounding smooth, silvery rocks. the trees were thinned out here, allowing sunshine to flood the small clearing, much to any cat's delight.
the pool didn't concern pumpkinpatch, as it was only deep enough to go up to his belly fur- he'd tested it. in fact, it was particularly nice in greenleaf, when one could lay out, baking in the sun, then wade into the shallow pool to cool off again. the area was far enough into the forest to be away from camp and out of the way of patrols, but not close to the borders, either. it was an extremely pleasant place to go.
it was just past midday, but pumpkinpatch was utterly exhausted. he'd awoken at dawn and greeted the warm day, only to discover himself tick-infested. after a visit to peachpaw, the sweet medicine cat to-be, he'd wandered the woods until he eventually caught a sparrow, and then a while later, a plump mouse. returning to camp to leave his humble offerings on the prey pile (hoping that falconstar would choose one for himself, just maybe?), pumpkinpatch had then found himself disposed to head to his favorite place for a nap.
on the way though, there'd been several golden-winged butterflies to chase, which really ate up quite a bit of time. the small tortoiseshell had tracked his way through a mud puddle, half by accident, half on purpose, so he'd had to stop and groom his muddy paws. now, with that incredibly time-consuming affair out of the way, he was free to simply lay on the rocks and warm his belly for as long as he pleased. or, until an older warrior came upon him and prompted him to return to camp to do something "productive."
